was supposed to delay the homecoming of
the 424th Transportation Company of
Galax.

But they got here earlier than
expected, just in time for the
holidays.

accident on I-81 tonight.

State police charged a driver with
an improper lane change after running
his car off the road into a guardrail,
and hitting a tractor-trailer.

The accident happened just after
7:30.

The left lane was closed for
thirty-five minutes around the 581
interchange.

No injuries were reported.

Traffic has been congested for
hours due to Tech students leaving for
the holiday and construction.

Press, Delegate Preston Bryant will
take the post of secretary of natural
resources in Governor-elect Tim Kaine's
cabinet.

The Lynchburg Republican led 17
fellow House Republicans in

breaking with their party's anti-tax
line to pass a tax increase two years
ago.

The official announcement of
Brytant's appointment is scheduled for
tomorrow.

Last winter, Bryant lost his seat
on the House Appropriations Committee
-- the most powerful of House
committees.

House Speaker Bill Howell says
Bryant has NOT informed him of the
appointment.

sentences, but two men convicted of
sexual assault in Virginia have been
exonerated by a review of old D-N-A

samples.

cases that were part of a random review
ordered by Governor Mark Warner last
year.

The evidence reviewed had been
saved from cases between 1973 and 1988,
which was before the advent of D-N-A
testing.

As a result the governor is
ordering the remainder of those old
case files be tested.

Officials estimate there are
about 300.

Most of them are sexual assault
cases.

of killing his grandmother will likely
face charges in Circuit Court.

A first- degree murder charge was

certified to the grand jury today, as
investigators revealed more details
about the crime.

hearing, a detective testified that 14-
year- old Chris Jamison (JAM-i-sun)
admitted killing his grandmother.

November The investigator said the boy
explained how he took a knife from the
kitchen, put it under a pillow and
walked into the room where Jean Jamison
was smoking a cigarette.

The teenager said he told his
grandmother he was sorry, before he
stabbed her in the back, abdomen, and

mayor Carl Hutcherson are now seeking

to have government attorneys taken off
the case.

John Fishwick filed a motion today
to disqualify the U-S Attorney's
office, claiming prosecutor Tom
Bondurant is a material witness to
Count Six of the indictment. The
Government says, "No," the F-B-I took
Hutcherson's statement, not Prosecutor
Bondurant.

Hutcherson is accused of bank and
Social Security fraud as well as
providing false statements to the
government.

Bondurant says the defense motion
is frivolous. At the same time, he is
seeking to have Hutcherson's attorneys
disqualified from representing him.

snowstorm.

were hurt after a reservoir ruptured in
southeast Missouri this morning.

The breach in the reservoir sent
water rushing down the Black River,
causing flooding and evacuations.

The reservoir is part of a
hydroelectric power plant and holds 1.5
billion gallons of water... about one
billion gallons escaped.

The C-E-O of the company says the
plant's automated instruments had
pumped too much water into the
reservoir and caused the breach.

Investigators are trying to figure
out why a backup set of instruments did
not recognize the problem.

Franklin County's Wynn Sigmon is
in Florida with the Eagles basketball
team, but his coach Billy Miles
accepted his award as Lee Cook lineman
of the year.

Miles also claimed coach of the
year honors in the triple A ranks,
leading Franklin County to the playoffs
for the third time in 6 years.

YEAR:

In Group 2A, Cave Spring's Tim
Fulton took top billing, voted coach of
the year by his peers, after taking the
Knights to a 10 and 2 record and a spot
in the regional finals all in his first
year as head coach.

TIM FULTON/GROUP AA COACH OF THE YEAR:

Steve Ragsdale captured his 3rd

state title at Giles this season, and
grabbed Group A Coach of the year
honors for the second straight year.

Salem went undefeated at 14 and
oh, capturing a second straight
Division Four crown. For that, Coach
Steve Magenbauer was named overall
Coach of the Year.

Campbell, shared the team of the Year
award. Both sets of Spartans and the
Generals celebrated last Saturday with
state titles.

won the National Junior Bull Riding
Championship.

The sixth grader has been riding
bulls since he was three, starting out
with sheep then moving on to bigger
live stock.

The bulls he rides average about a
thousand pounds.

His injuries include a fractured
growth plate and a broken foot.
