Road is more clear than portions of
I-81 and 581.
Throughout the morning there have
been a number of accidents- mostly
fender-benders.

brought to crawl after a jackknifed
tractor-trailer had to be cleaned up.
Slick conditions sent cars into
the median.
And, VDOT's Jason Bond says if

are echoing.

A U-S airways Flight from
Philadelphia was able to land in
Roanoke about a half an hour ago.
The Airport has been able to keep
the runways clear enough for planes to
make it in and out so far.
However .. we can tell you a lot of
flights have been either delayed or
cancelled.
That's meant a lot of waiting for
passengers at the airport.
Airport officials advise people to
call individual airlines for the most
accurate information on specific
flights.
It's actually airlines .. not the
airport that makes final determinations
on whether a flight will go or not.

Ice is pelting the ground and
covering sidewalks and roadways.
V-DOT trucks are out and about,
but 460 in Montgomery County was still
pretty slick this morning.
We saw several stranded vehicles
and motorists were only able to drive
about 40 miles an hour.

central Virginia which has seen things
change from snow to rain to sleet in
the space of a few hours.

The storm started out with heavy
snowfall early this morning, leaving
about an inch or so on the ground in
most places.
By mid-morning, rain started to
fall, leaving area roads slushy and
slippery and causing several minor
accidents.
The rain has since turned into
sleet and freezing rain and authorities
are urging motorists to use caution.

kitchen of a third floor apartment,
leaving a mother and her month-old
baby trapped.
On surveillance video, you can see
Felix Vasques make the catch of a
lifetime, when the woman threw her baby
out of a window.

landing for a Fed Ex cargo plane this
morning.

The plane rolled into mud after
landing at Charlotte- Douglas
International Airport.
An airport official says the pilot
of the Airbus A- 300 was guiding the
aircraft down a taxiway, when he got
stuck.
Despite appearances, officials say
the winter weather wasn't a factor in
the accident.
A tug equipped with a tow bar pulled
the aircraft out.
No one was injured.

sentences, but two men convicted of
sexual assault in Virginia have been
exonerated by a review of old D-N-A
samples.

cases that were part of a random review
ordered by Governor Mark Warner last
year.
The evidence reviewed had been
saved from cases between 1973 and 1988,
which was before D-N-A testing.
As a result, the governor is
ordering the remainder of those old
case files be tested.
Officials estimate there are
about 300.
Most of them are sexual assault
cases.

The Illinois Supreme Court has
thrown out a 10- billion- dollar class
action lawsuit against the Richmond-
based cigarette maker.
The court ruled Philip Morris did
NOT defraud customers in its marketing
of "light" cigarettes.
In the lawsuit, more than a million
smokers claimed the company knew when
it introduced light cigarettes in 19-
71 that they were no healthier than
regular cigarettes.

Delegate Preston Bryant will take the
post of secretary of natural resources
in Governor-elect Tim Kaine's cabinet.
An official announcement is scheduled
for today.
The Lynchburg Republican led 17
fellow House Republicans to break with
their party's anti- tax line, passing a
tax increase two years ago.
Last winter, Bryant lost his seat
on the powerful House Appropriations
Committee.
House Speaker Bill Howell says
Bryant has NOT informed HIM of the
appointment.

caught on camera this morning.

apparently racing went out of control,
and sheared off a fire hydrant before
slamming into a parked bus.
Two people in the car were critically
injured.
The bus was parked on the side of

The big winner was Rural Retreat
senior Luke Reasor - this year's Noel
C. Taylor Scholar athlete of the year.
He ranks first in his class with a
grade point average of 4 point 259. He
also captained the football team both
his junior and senior seasons. He
headed to the University of South
Carolina.

scholarship committee defeintely got
into the holiday spirit - giving out a
record 7 $1000 dollar scholarships.

grants was made possible by a $3
thousand, one hundred and 25 dollar
gift from the Western Virginia
officials association.

The recipients are from Fleming,
Salem, Staunton River, Magna Vista,
Roanoke Catholic, and also Roy's alma
mater - George Wythe.

but it is not because of an injury.

Haslett says he was replacing the
former U-V-A standout with Todd Bouman

Brooks is in the midst of his worst
year in seven seasons and says he
didn't argue when told of the decision.

(END SOT) with a plaque and Friday Football Extra
goodie bag full of holiday hardware.
Franklin County's Wynn Sigmon is
in Florida with the Eagles basketball
team, but his coach Billy Miles
accepted his award as Lee Cook lineman
of the year.
Miles also claimed coach of the
year honors in the triple A ranks,
leading Franklin County to the playoffs
for the third time in 6 years.

YEAR:
In Group 2A, Cave Spring's Tim
Fulton took top billing, voted coach of
the year by his peers, after taking the
Knights to a 10 and 2 record and a spot
in the regional finals all in his first
year as head coach.
TIM FULTON/GROUP AA COACH OF THE YEAR:
Steve Ragsdale captured his 3rd
state title at Giles this season, and
grabbed Group A Coach of the year
honors for the second straight year.
STEVE RAGSDALE/GROUP A COACH OF THE
YEAR:
Salem went undefeated at 14 and
oh, capturing a second straight
Division Four crown. For that, Coach
Steve Magenbauer was named overall
Coach of the Year.
STEVE MAGENBAUER/OVERALL COACH OF THE
YEAR:
Salem, Giles, and William
Campbell, shared the team of the Year
award. Both sets of Spartans and the
Generals celebrated last Saturday with
state titles.
