more money for rail transportation.

Norfolk Southern's Heartland
Corridor plan was one of 12- projects
approved yesterday by the Commonwealth
Transportation Board.
The company plans to increase
tunnel clearances and make other rail
improvements.
Once that's completed, trains
will be able to carry double- stacked
truck-loads, easing congestion on
Interstate- 81.
The company also plans to build a
new terminal in the Roanoke Valley.
The improvements will cost nearly
40- million- dollars.
23- million will being funded by
the state using the rail enhancement
fund.

battle what turned out to be a small
blaze.
Fire officials say the building
is a popular spot for homeless people

View Mall in Mid-December is usually a
daunting task, but that wasn't the case
yesterday.

The snow and sleet kept many
customers away, but there were a few
die-hards who braved the snow and ice
and enjoyed a stress free shopping
experience.
Unlike shoppers, retailers dread
days like yesterday, especially this
close to Christmas.
Shop owners at the mall say they
hope people didn't decide to stay home
and shop on-line instead.
By five o'clock the weather had
forced Valley View to close, but the
mall expects to open on time this
morning.
