THAT'S TOO CLOSE TO TEACHING THE

it should have equal footing with
Evolution - because both, are

of complex life forms.

BUT FOR THE 8-FAMILIES WHO SUED, THEIR
MESSAGE WAS SIMPLE.

Vic Walczak / LEGAL DIRECTOR, ACLU
PENNSYLVANIA: "if you support

intelligent design, you do so because

you want to promote your view of

God as the creator."

THE DOVER AREA SCHOOL BOARD'S NEW
PRESIDENT SAYS -- INTELLIGENT

Bernadette Reinking / DOVER AREA SCHOOL

find a medium where we can put that --
a happy medium where we can put

be all right with everyone."

TODAY'S RULING ONLY APPLIES TO THE

ATTORNEYS ARE EXPECTED TO USE IT AS
PRECEDENT, IN SIMILAR CASES.

GRAPHIC=None Christmas falls on a Sunday this year

... a coincidence on the calendar that
only comes around about once a decade.

And as American churches prepare to
celebrate the birth of Jesus on Sunday
- some will do so without even opening
the church doors. Critics say that is
a bad thing.

Stacy Case reports.

NAT: welcome to fellowship church

THIS IS ONE OF AMERICA'S 10 LARGEST
CHURCHES.

BUT ON ONE OF THE HOLIEST OF DAYS ON
THE CHRISTIAN CALENDAR, THIS CHURCH

OUTSIDE DALLAS, IS CLOSING ITS DOORS.

SUPER: ED YOUNG/PASTOR FELLOWSHIP
CHURCH-GRAPEVINE, TX

I don't think God is hung up on a day,
I think he's more into the way.

AND THE WAY FOR THIS MEGA CHURCH AND AT
LEAST EIGHT OTHERS ACROSS THE

COUNTRY, IS TO INSTEAD OFFER MULTIPLE
SERVICES BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

SUPER: TONIA CASPER/CHRISTIAN

our family plans to attend one of those
and then continue our tradition

of being at home on christmas day.

BUT OTHER CHRISTIANS WHO'VE TAKEN ON
RETAILERS FOR THEIR USE OF 'HAPPY

HOLIDAYS' AND WHO ARE USED TO FIGHTING
FOR SPACE IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE -

ACCUSE SOME OF THEIR OWN OF BOWING TO
POPULAR CULTURE.

THIS PROFESSOR OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP
SAYS CHRISTIANS CAN'T REALLY HAVE IT

BOTH WAYS.

SUPER: MARK STAMM/SOUTHERN METHODIST
UNIVERSITY-ASST PROFESSOR OF

CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

churches that decide not to worship on
the Lord's day are missing an

opportunity to speak beyond the
culture.

STAND UP BRIDGE: STACY CASE/REPORTING

THOUGH THESE MEGA CHURCHES ARE HIGHLY
INFLUENTIAL THEY ONLY MAKE UP A

FRACTION OF THE CHURCHES ACROSS
AMERICA, THE MAJORITY OF WHICH WILL BE

OPEN CHRISTMAS SUNDAY.

SUPER: JAMES DENISON/DALLAS BAPTIST
MINISTER

the message we wanted to send to the
community is that Christmas is

first and foremost an act of worship

SUPER: ED YOUNG/ PASTOR FELLOWSHIP
CHURCH-GRAPEVINE, TX

I don't feel at all like we're caving
into culture. I feel like we're

capturing the pulse of the culture.

THE LAST TIME CHRISTMAS FELL ON A
SUNDAY IN 1994, THESE TREND-SETTING

CHURCHES SAY ATTENDANCE WAS SPARSE.
AND IT'S TRUE EVEN RELIGIOUS

SCHOLARS CAN'T AGREE ON JESUS' EXACT
DATE OF BIRTH.

AND CHURCHES THAT ARE OPEN HOPE THOSE
THAT AREN'T-- DON'T CLOUD THEIR

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE. STACY CASE CBS NEWS
