Police say a teenaged driver from
Pearisburg fell asleep at the wheel
between Narrows and Rich Creek.

19 year old Sean Adam Brugh
veered off the west bound lane of 460
and slid down the guardrail for several
feet, before flipping his car down a
steep embankment.

Four people had to be rescued.

Three were flown by helicopter to
Roanoke.

The road was shutdown in both
directions for about an hour.

State Police charged Brugh with
reckless driving and failure to wear a

"THE EXECUTIVE BOARD JUST VOTED
OVERWHELMINGLY TO DIRECT TRANSIT

Mayor Michael Bloomberg/(R) New York:

"I AM PLEASED THAT THE TWU EXECUTIVE
BOARD HAS AGREED WITH ITS LEADERSHIP."

People familiar with the system say it
could take up to 24 hours before the
trains and buses get up to speed.

The union faces bruising financial
penalties -- a million dollar a day
fine and individual members could lose
four days pay.

Alison Harmelin:

AND WITH BOTH SIDES HEADED BACK TO THE
BARGAINING TABLE, SOME SEVEN AND A-HALF
MILLION COMMUTERS MIGHT SOON FIND THESE
SUBWAY GATES OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

Lilly McDaniels/NY Commuter:

I THINK IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY SETTLE,
THIS IS THE BUSIEST WEEK IN NEW YORK
AND THEY ARE HURTING AN AWFUL LOT OF
PEOPLE.

The city says it has lost at least 700
million dollars -- particularly from
paying for police overtime. Retailers
have been hard hit as well -- the city
says in some areas, 50% of stores
shutdown due to the strike.

But with the busiest shopping weekend
just ahead... and buses and subways
getting back up to speed... it seems
Christmas in New York might have come a

(END SOT) Climatalogically, a white christmas is

hard to come by in southwest Virginia.

In fact, there's normally only a
17% chance that we'll have snow on the
ground for the big day, even lesser
chances that it will actually be
snowing on the 25th.

While the odds are against us,
the Roanoke Valley has had a white
christmas or two over the years.

The last Christmas where Roanoke had at
least an inch of snow on the ground
Christmas Day was in 1993, leftover
from a snowstorm that week.

The last time it actually snowed
on Christmas Day was in 1981, when and
inch an a half fell throughout the
morning.

And those who like to dream big.
The Christmas of 1969 was the whitest
of all for Southwest Virginia. In The
Roanoke Valley, 14.6 inches of snow
fell Christmas Day, causing numerous
travel delays along area highways, and
in the sky.

After the gift giving, this snowy
hillside was transformed into a busy

ski slope.

So where do you have to go for
snow.

Here's how a few east coast
cities stack up. Statistically, the
most likely areas for seeing snow on
Christmas are Vermont, Maine, and Great
Lake areas.

Washington DC has a 13% chance.
Even Cape Hatteras North Carolina has a
3% chance of seeing a white
Christmas.>>

VO-NAT Some southern California beaches

are being hammered with 15-foot waves.

*CG locator Seal Beach, CA

At Seal Beach, the city had to
take steps to protect swimmers and
surfers from the rising swells.

Local life guards advised amateur
surfers to stay out of the water.

Breakers up to 20-feet high are
expected to prevail through tomorrow
and will extend from the central coast
all way to San Diego.

The swells are being generated by
storms farther out to sea in the
Pacific.
