Altavista.
And investigators say it was all
the result of a discarded cigarette.

departments responded to a building at
the intersection of Broad and Main.
The fire marshal says one person
was in an upstairs apartment and did
NOT dispose of his cigarette properly.
That man was treated for minor

Several businesses on the street
level were heavily damaged by water and
smoke.
No word tonight on the extent of
damage to the four upstairs apartment
units, but the whole building has been
temporarily condemned.
Emergency officials did evacuate
some surrounding businesses as a
precaution.
It took about 2 hours to get the
fire under control.

overloaded extension cord was to blame
for an early morning fire that
displaced a family, and caused more
than 100- thousand dollars damage.

Flames were coming from windows
on the first floor when firefighters
arrived on North Blair Street.
They were able to bring the blaze
under control in just over thirty
minutes.
The family of four and their
animals escaped without injury, but the
house suffered extensive damage.

Yesterday The woman found dead after her
home burned down in Franklin County WAS
Doris Brown, the former county
treasurer.
The medical examiner says Brown
was overcome by smoke from the fire
that destroyed her house near Burnt
Chimney yesterday.
The cause of the fire is still

on Route 460 in Giles County this
morning.

Police say a teenaged driver from
Pearisburg fell asleep at the wheel.
19-year-old Sean Adam Brugh
veered off the west bound lane of 460
and slid down the guardrail for several
feet, before flipping down a steep
embankment.
Four people had to be cut from
the car.
Three were flown by helicopter to
Roanoke.
Two are listed in critical
condition, and one is in serious
condition.
The road was shutdown in both
directions for about an hour.
State Police charged Brugh with
reckless driving and failure to wear a
seatbelt.

cigarettes, but two thieves who broke
into a Franklin County convenience
store Friday night may have also picked
up a few bruises.

men breaking into the Eagle Mart on
Hardy Road. And one of them falls down
after kicking the glass.
The other thief climbs over the
counter and begins throwing cartons of
cigarettes out the door.
Franklin County Investigators say
the men stole 30 cartons of cigarettes
and two 24- packs of Bud Light. One of
them may have fallen again during the
escape.

Coach of Indianapolis Colts has passed
away.

James Dungy who was 18 years old
was found in his apartment just outside
of Tampa where Dungy used to be the
head coach early this morning by his
girlfriend. He was pronounced dead at
a nearby Hospital. The police do not
suspect any foul play at this time.
The Elder Dungy has left the
Colts to be with his family in Tampa
and their is no time-table for his
return to the team. Jim Caldwell the
former Head Coach at Wake Forest and
current Assistant head coach with Indy
will take over the team in Dungy's
absence. The Colts take on Seattle
this weekend.

Station is making way for new
construction.

Crews have been clearing the
building at the corner of Colonial and
Brandon, and today they took down the
canopy over the driveway to give their
equipment better access.
The building served as the main
studio of WDBJ-7 for more than 40
years, but has been vacant since the
station moved to the digital broadcast
center on Hershberger Road.
A developer recently purchased
the Colonial Avenue site for a new
C-V-S drug store.
