Thursday Night Police say 45-year-old Bernard
Taylor stole a ring from the JC-Penney
store at Tanglewood Mall.
Police and an ambulance were
called to the parking lot after a store
employee chased the suspect to his car.
The employee was dragged a short
distance by a light colored Lexus and
was taken to the hospital with non-life
threatening injuries.
But Police say Taylor's crime
spree actually began Thursday afternoon
with a stolen credit card.
Later that night, he was chased
from Penney's.
Police say the spree continued
about an hour later with an attempted
hold-up at Diva's House of Hair at
Lamplighter Mall in Roanoke.
Taylor then allegedly robbed the
residents of a home on Raymond Avenue.
Taylor was caught when his Lexus
crashed on Lewiston Road while being
chased by Roanoke police.

OQ=CBS News. << Among the spy satellites operated by
(END SOT) the National Security Agency
are three code-named "Trumpet" that
circle the earth in elliptical
orbits eavesdropping specifically on
cell phone calls. So by just what
authority did the president allow those
satellites to spy on calls by
U.S. citizens overseas without a
warrant?
NARR:
The White House has insisted all
week such authority was implicitly
granted shortly after 9-11 when
Congress approved a resolution allowing
the president to use military force
against Al Qaeda. But today, one of
the authors of that resolution, former
majority leader, Sen. Tom
Daschle, said....hold on, that was
stretching the point by a mile.
(NARR OVER GRAPHIC:)
In an opinion article for the
Washington Post Daschle wrote,
"warrantless wiretaps of American
citizens never came up...." and there
was "no mention of additional authority
in(side) the United States" in
the resolution.
NARR:
Congress rushed home for the
holidays last night, but it's a
distinction certain to be hashed out
when they return and likely hold
hearings on the issue. Another question
certain to be asked is just
what, exactly, did all that secret
surveillance accomplish? So far the
White House has offered only one
conflicting example.
(NARR OVER GRAPHIC: Faris picture over
brooklyn bridge)
That was the case of Iyman Faris, an
Ohio truck driver and naturalized
U.S. citizen, who pleaded guilty in
2003 to supporting Al Qaeda by
planning to cut down the Brooklyn
bridge with a blowtorch.
(NARR OVER GRAPHIC...NYT masthead)
The NSA spy program was necessary
because it "helped uncover" the
Faris plot, the White House told The
New York Times, who broke the
surveillance story.
NARR:
But last summer the president gave
credit for the Faris case to the
Patriot Act, which does require court
approval for wiretaps.
(SOT/Bush) (June 9, 2005) (11:36:45)
"They used the Patriot Act to
discover that Faris had cased possible
targets in New York and that he
reported his findings to Al Qaeda."
CLOSE:
So the question would be: why
wiretap someone secretly without a
court order, when you already had a
court approved wiretap in the first
place? So far, the administration
hasn't come up with an answer. Jim
Stewart, CBS News.>>

Thursday Night Police say 45-year-old Bernard
Taylor stole a ring from the JC-Penney
store at Tanglewood Mall.
Police and an ambulance were
called to the parking lot after a store
employee chased the suspect to his car.
The employee was dragged a short
distance by a light colored Lexus and
was taken to the hospital with non-life
threatening injuries.
But Police say Taylor's crime
spree actually began Thursday afternoon
with a stolen credit card.
Later that night, he was chased
from Penney's.
Police say the spree continued
about an hour later with an attempted
hold-up at Diva's House of Hair at
Lamplighter Mall in Roanoke.
Taylor then allegedly robbed the
residents of a home on Raymond Avenue.
Taylor was caught when his Lexus
crashed on Lewiston Road while being
chased by Roanoke police.
