now in danger of disappearing from the
United States.

Now, foreign newspapers are
reporting that the new owners of Dan
River will move all of the company's

GRAPHIC=HOLD It was only a few months ago that
Dan River appeared to be back in
business after falling on some hard
times.

VO-NAT The company first made yarn and
fabric in Danville in 1883.
By the 1970's it was one of the
largest employers in Virginia, with
more than 10-thousand workers.
But as textile manufacturing
began to suffer from foreign
competition, Dan River closed plants,
and cut jobs.
By March of last year it was in
Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
It came out of bankruptcy
protection last February, but put its
apparel division on the market.
By then it was employing 12- to-
16- hundred people in Danville.

Christmas Eve deaths of a Craig County
couple...
Authorities say a preliminary
report shows that 60-year-old Thomas
"Sonny" Howard died of a self-inflicted
gunshot wound.
At this point, it has not been
determined how his wife, 60-year-old
Thelma Greenway Howard, died.
The couple was found dead inside
a trailer outside of their home
Saturday.

at 2005 and says it was a pretty good
year.

tops his list of accomplishments for
the year.
He's also proud of the
improvements V-Dot has made.
Last quarter 85- percent of the
agency's projects were on- time and on-

V-dot has also improved what the
governor calls "inappropriate
financing" of its deficit projects.

Current Roanoke County supervisor
and former Craig County administrator
Richard Flora is returning to his old
job.
Flora currently works for the
Roanoke County school system, but will
retire from that position in March.
He will stay on the Roanoke
County board of Supervisors. The two
entities don't have any partnerships or
agreements so Flora says it won't be a
conflict of interest.
The 65-year-old says Craig
County's biggest challenge will be
getting the budget and spending in
line.

service will bring in customers.

The town is revamping its
downtown area using more than a million
dollars in federal money.
Expect to see improvements
to store fronts along main street over
the next five years... although much of
the work has already been done.
And a 250-thousand dollar grant
from the Appalachian Regional
Commission will cover the cost of more
store fronts, sidewalks and housing
improvements.
The owner of Nuckolls Drug says
she already sees more customers coming
in.

two similar Christmas morning robbery
attempts.
Roanoke Police hope a
surveillance photo may help crack the
case.

Sunday morning at the Stop-In on
Memorial Avenue.
Police say the man showed
a gun, then ran off without getting any
money.
About 30 minutes later,
someone tried to rob the Stop In on
Plantation road. The description of
that suspect is similar to the Memorial
Avenue suspect.

a mysterious death in the town.
Betty Hull was found dead in her
home on Mount Olivet Road on December
11th.
According to a search warrant her
body had a few injuries, but police are
not sure what caused her death.
She was found by her son Dustin
Hull.
Police waiting on reports from
the medical examiner's office.

Roanoke has died.
Police say he died Monday, but
have not yet released his name.
He was hit by a car last Friday
night in the 41-hundred block of
Williamson Road.
No charges have been filed
against the driver.

death of Mindy Damron Dickerson.
Police searched the 26 year old
Pulaski woman's former home for a
second time last week.

VO-NAT Almost a year ago, Dickerson was
found dead in her bed with blood in her
hair and scratches to her face, neck
and mouth.
As of November, the medical
examiner still did NOT have a cause of
death.
Last week's search warrant was
sealed by a court order, to protect the
police investigation.

Police have NOT named the pair as
suspects.
