late this afternoon.

When they arrived, they found a
unidentified man in the backyard.

Two children who lived at the house
initially spotted the body from an
upstairs bedroom window.

Witnesses say it appeared the man had
been dead several days.

Roanoke Valley bank's been robbed.
Tonight it was a bank in Salem.

A man in his mid-twenties, went
into the bank of Floyd at Spartan
Square at about 5:30.

Police say the man told the
teller he had a weapon and demanded
money. The suspect wore blue jeans
and a red flannel shirt and drove a
light blue or silver vehicle.

No one was hurt and police won't
say how much the robber made off with.

when a runaway trailer crashed into her
car this afternoon.

Ethel Clark of Blue Ridge was
driving on Orange Avenue in Roanoke

around 12:30 when a utility trailer
broke free from a van and hit her car.

Parts of the trailer broke
through her windshield and hit Clark.

She was taken to Roanoke Memorial

have made a break in a murder case.

April 1987 In 1987, Roanoke Police found
87-year-old Bertha Sommardahl dead.

Police say someone went through
the back window of Sommardahl's
apartment and stabbed her.

18 years later, police now have
someone in custody.

But that person has not been

charged with the fatal stabbing.

According to the Associated
Press, a D-N-A "cold hit" led police to
a particular person.

A "cold hit" means evidence such
as blood or hair matches D-N-A
registered in the state's D-N-A from
convicted felons.

after a shooting late last night.

Lorenzo Fitzgerald of Danville shot a
man at Woodside Village Apartments,
then led police on chase through the
city.

Fitzgerald's been charged with
the murder of 19 year old Terrance
Jamal Barley.

is in jail charged with sexually
abusing a minor.

outings from a Washington hospital.

John Hinckley may spend seven overnight
visits with his parents in
Williamsburg.

Hinckley, who shot President
Reagan in 1981, has been held at St.
Elizabeth's Hospital since he was found
not guilty by reason of insanity in
1982.

He has been allowed outings
around Washington but wanted to make
longer trips and travel outside the
area.

Hinckley will be under parental
supervision at all times during the

who saved a mother and her infant from
their burning apartment tells us about
the rescue.

Sergeant Kevin Tucker responded
to the call for help around 4-30
yesterday morning.

The mother told 9-1-1 they were
trapped and running out of air.

Tucker was the first to get
there.

He kicked in the door and felt
his way to 21 year-old April Elkashef
and her five month-old baby, Kacie.

After pulling them from the
apartment to safety, Tucker went back
in to put out the sofa fire.

However, they did not make it.

that the University of Tennessee -
where Nicci is headed next year on a
full scholarship - is with her 100
