That was when Roanoke Police
found 87-year-old Bertha Sommardahl
dead.

She had been stabbed.

The case remained cold for 18
years until recently.

shocked those who lived at the Grandin
Apartment Complex in Raleigh Court in

1987.

Police say someone went through
Sommardahl's rear window and stabbed
her.

18 years later, police now have
someone in custody.

But that person has not been
charged with the fatal stabbing

According to the Associated
Press, a D-N-A "cold hit" led police to
this particular person.

A "cold hit" means evidence such
as blood or hair matches D-N-A
registered in the state's D-N-A from
convicted felons.

QUESTION: What are family members
saying about the break in the case?

We tried to contact family
members of Bertha Sommardahl.

Her granddaughter declined to
talk to us at this time.

And we were unable to reach
Bertha Sommardahl's son who lives in
Richmond.

We also talked to a Lieutenant

with Roanoke Police and he said the
department will likely have more
information about this case sometime
next week.

GRAPHIC=Shooting It was a wild night in


Danville... A shooting left one man
dead and another injured- and police
had to chase down a suspect.

It started around 10:55 at the
Woodside Village Apartment complex.
Nearby officers heard the gunfire and
were told that a man in apartment H- 61
had been shot.

They found 19 year old Terrance
Jamal Barley of Danville dead of an
apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Other officers noticed a
suspicious vehicle leaving the

apartment complex.

The driver did not stop- instead
heading south on Piney Forest Road.

39 year old Keith Lorenzo
Fitzgerald of Danville was apprehended
after police chased him onto a dead end
street.

He's been charged with the first
degree murder of Terrance Barley.

over.

Officials spent the past week

digging the critters out after their
dirt- filled exhibit collapsed.

Four dogs were found dead, but
officials don't believe their deaths
were related to the collapse.

GRAPHIC=NICCI MOATS 2005 has ended on a less than


ideal note for Nicci Moats.

The star basketball player from
Lord Botetourt injured her knee last
night in the William Byrd Christmas
tournament, and she likely has a torn
anterior cruciate ligament.

Her dad says Nicci saw orthopedic
surgeon Brent Johnson today and xrays
showed that the knee does not have any

bone or structural damage.

However, the swelling will have
to go down before an MRI can be
performed to determine the extent of
any ligament or cartilage damage.

Wednesday Night The injury came just a day after :00 Nicci recorded her 1000th career
rebound in the opening round of the
three day tournament in Vinton.

Because of the swelling and the
Holiday weekend, it likely will be
sometime next week before the MRI exam
can be done.

Nicci's dad also told us today
that the University of Tennessee -
where Nicci is headed next year on a
full scholarship - is with her 100
percent of the way and the coaches
still want her in Knoxville next
season.
