(nats)

ACETAMINOPHEN IS THE ACTIVE DRUG IN
TYLENOL.

BUT IT'S ALSO AN INGREDIENT IN MANY
OTHER PRESCRIPTION AND

NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS.

MANY PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE IT'S IN THE
PILLS THEY TAKE - FOR COLD RELIEF,

TO GET TO SLEEP AND FOR PAIN.

(SOT-Joanne Meyer/Mt. Sinai Medical

Center)

"we find that vicodin is a big problem
because there is a combination

vicodin double strength that actually
contains 750 mgs of acetaminophen

in that one tablet."

IF YOU COMBINE A PRESCRIPTION
MEDICATION LIKE VICODIN WITH AN

OVER-THE-COUNTER COLD MEDICINE THAT
ALSO CONTAINS ACETAMINOPHEN, YOU MAY

UNWITTINGLY TAKE MORE THAN THE MAXIMUM
RECOMMENDED DOSE OF 4-THOUSAND

MILLIGRAMS.

(SOT- Dr. Douglas Dieterich/Mt. Sinai

"this medicine can sneak up on you and
poison your liver without anyone

ever realizing it until it could be too
late."

(STANDUP: Dr. David Marks/CBS NEWS/New
York, NY)

AND IT HAPPENS MORE THAN FIRST THOUGHT.

NEW RESEARCH SHOWS MANY LIVER FAILURES
IN THIS COUNTRY ARE CAUSED BY

ACETAMINOPHEN POISONING BECAUSE PEOPLE
JUST DIDN'T REALIZE HOW MUCH THEY

WERE TAKING.

(nats)

AND SOME PEOPLE ARE AT A HIGHER RISK.

HEAVY DRINKERS MAY HAVE INJURED LIVERS
TO BEGIN WITH.

AND OLDER PATIENTS MAY HAVE PROBLEMS
BECAUSE THEIR BODIES' DON'T FILTER

THE DRUG OUT VERY EFFICIENTLY.

EXPERTS SAY THE BEST ADVICE IS TO KNOW
HOW MUCH ACETAMINOPHEN IS IN THE

PILLS YOU TAKE.

(SOT-Joanne Meyer/Mt. Sinai Medical

Center)

"you want to add up all the milligrams
that you're taking in a day and

making sure it stays within a safe
range."

(SOT- Dr. Douglas Dieterich/Mt. Sinai

Medical Center)

"you only have one liver. Treat it
well."

OLDER PATIENTS CAN TREAT THEIR LIVER
WELL BY LIMITING ACETAMINOPHEN

INTAKE TO ABOUT 2-THOUSAND MILLIGRAMS A
DAY -- HALF THE MAXIMUM

RECOMMENDED DOSE.

AND EVERYONE SHOULD AVOID TAKING

ACETAMINOPHEN AFTER DRINKING A

SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL.
