this morning.

The fire started in a second
floor bedroom. Smoke and flames were
showing when firefighters got to the
27-hundred block of Garden City
Boulevard.
Two people were home, but they
escaped without injury.
Investigators believe the blaze
was an accidental electrical fire.
Early estimates put the damage at 30-
thousand dollars.

Roanoke sheriff George McMillan

He lost to Octavia Johnson in the
November election; she'll be Roanoke's
first female sheriff.

history, leading to a recount won by

A fatal boating accident at Smith
Mountain Lake was one of our top four
stories of the year.
A speedboat crashed one August
night into Larry and Judi Lewis's cabin
cruiser.
The incident touched off a debate
over boating safety, and left Mark
DeTournillon facing manslaughter
charges.
Victory Stadium dominated the
headlines again last year in Roanoke,
with city council endorsing the idea of
separate stadiums at the two high
schools. Supporters of renovating the
city landmark, bolstered by a
consultant's report, vowed to make it
an issue in the May elections.

last year, but struck with fury along
the Gulf Coast.
Hundreds of people from the state
helped shelter survivors of the storms,
and went south to help with recovery
efforts.
And 2005 was the year that the
war in Iraq continued to affect people
thousands of miles away. Guard and
reserve units were called up; as others
came home.
Two southwest Virginia natives
joined 60 others from the commonwealth
who have died in the war so far,
Martinsville police officer Jon Bowling
and Franklin County's Jared Kubasak.
