GRAPHIC=Mine Accident Not the news anyone wanted to hear
tonight. Mine officials tonight
confirm one person is dead at a West
Virginia mine.
That body was apparently found in a

trapped in the mine.

AFTER NEARLY A TWO-DAY SEARCH,
RESCUERS FINALLY FOUND ONE OF THE
MINERS
... BUT NOT THE MIRACLE THEY WERE
HOPING FOR. HE DID NOT SURVIVE.
(SOT: BEN HATFIELD/CEO, INTERNATIONAL
COAL GROUP INC.)
EARLIER IN THE DAY, IT DIDN'T LOOK
HOPEFUL.
HOLES DRILLED IN THE GROUND REVEALED
DEADLY LEVELS OF CARBON MONOXIDE
AND NO SIGNS OF LIFE.
FOR THE MINERS' FAMILIES AND FRIENDS,
IT HAS BEEN A LONG AND AGONIZING
WAIT.
(SOT: TOM TOLER/BROTHER OF TRAPPED
MINER)
"The family is pulling together really
good. And we're a close family
anyway." (crying)
(STANDUP BRIDGE)
MONDAY'S UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION IS ALSO
RAISING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE
SAFETY RECORD OF THE SAGO MINE. IT
RECEIVED MORE THAN 300 CITATIONS
LAST YEAR -- 46 OF THEM IN THE WEEKS
LEADING UP TO CHRISTMAS.
THE VIOLATIONS INCLUDED THE BUILD-UP OF
DANGEROUS GASSES.
BUT COMPANY OFFICIALS SAY THEY STILL
DON'T KNOW IF THAT HAD ANYTHING TO
WITH THE BLAST.
(SOT: HATFIELD AGAIN) 17:21:55
"It doesn't make sense to us that the
methane levels are low everywhere
we go and yet we had an explosion that
seems to resemble a methane
explosion."
BUT MANY IN THIS CLOSE-KNIT MINING TOWN
-- NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR
FINGER-POINTING.
THEY JUST WANT THEIR LOVED-ONES HOME.

A special prosecutor today
cleared Allen Taylor and Terry Alley of
any wrong doing.
The investigation dealt with
missing military surplus equipment at
the sheriff's office.
The equipment was stored at
Taylor's home, even though he'd been
out of office for nearly two years.
Special prosecutor Jerry Wolfe
says while all of these actions were
very unprofessional, unethical and
unwise, there is insufficient evidence
to prove that the actions of either one
of the individuals being investigated
were done with criminal intent.
