GRAPHIC=Mine Explosion Good Evening. I'm Jean Jadhon.

Rescuers are still a few thousand
feet short of where they think 13 men
are trapped in a West virgnia coal
mine.

It has now been more than 35 hours
since the explosion at the mine... but
today some discouraging news.

Air tests show a high level of
carbon monoxide from within the mine

SOT, Clarence Ditlow, Center for Auto

times that of passenger vehicles...

IN FACT THE STUDY IN THE JOURNAL
PEDIATRICS FOUND THE EXTRA WEIGHT OF

SUVS DID REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY BUT
THAT WAS OFFSET BY THE INCREASED

RISK OF ROLL OVERS.

WHILE ROLLOVERS ACCOUNT FOR ONLY 3
PERCENT OF ACCIDENTS.. THEY MAKE UP

A THIRD OF ANNUAL HIGHWAY DEATHS.

AUTOMAKERS HAVE MADE STRIDES IN
PREVENTING ROLLOVERS.. BUT NEW

LEGISLATION MAY SPEED THE PROGRESS...
CONGRESS IS FORCING THE DEPARTMENT

OF TRANSPORTATION TO DEVELOP STANDARDS
FOR AUTOMAKERS TO ADDRESS SUV

ROLLOVERS -- INCLUDING IMPROVING
STABILITY IN TURNS... AND INCREASING

ROOF STRENGTH.

MEANWHILE -- PARENTS NEED TO REMEMBER
THAT NO MATTER WHAT THEY DRIVE,

THE SAME RULES APPLY -- CHILDREN SHOULD
ALWAYS WEAR A SEAT BELT AND SIT

GRAPHIC=BAM Good afternoon everybody and

welcome to the Tuesday ticker.

It's been just over 24 hours
since the Gator Bowl ended in
Jacksonville.

Normally, the Hokie Nation would
still be celebrating, but as you heard
earlier in the newscast - Marcus Vick's
antics are making that virtually
impossible.

As you should know by now, Vick
was caught on camera stomping or
stepping on the back of the calf and
inside the knee of Louisville all-
American Elvis Dumervil.

The officials didn't see it, but

the cameras did and they never lie.

The question is - was Vick
telling the whole truth when after the
game he said it was an accident and
that he apologized for his actions.

Vick said that Dumervil did
accept his apology, although the
Louisville folks say that's not so.

Whether it was accidental or
intentional, Tech quarterback
coach Kevin Rogers called the play an
embarrassment and Louisville coach
Bobby Petrino said it was unfortunate
because kids at home saw it.

Tech's athletic director Jim

Weaver issued a statement tonight
saying he was embarrrassed and would
deal with it accordingly.

scored a huge win for not only the
Mountaineer State, but the Big East
last night.

The game didn't end until well
after midnight, but the 38-to-35 Sugar
Bowl win over heavily favored Georgia
was as sweet as any win in West
Virginia history.

The seniors may have been the
glue that held things together - but
youth was served last night in the
Georgia Dome.

Freshman running back Steve
Slaton rushed for a Sugar Bowl record
211 yards and his quarterback fellow
freshman Pat White accounted for just
under 200 yards of offense.

West Virginia's finished the year
with 11 wins and just one loss.

in the playoffs for the first time
since 1999. A big reason why has been
the play of the Skins defense that is

VO-NAT The Former Buffalo Bills Head

Coach was expected to be a hot prospect

to be a head coach in the N-F-L again
this off-season. But Williams has
signed a new 3 year contract to remain
with the Redskins. His official title
with the club is Assistant Head Coach
of Defense. Williams has had the Skins
"D" ranked in the top 10 in his first 2
seasons in the Nation's capitol and
appears to be the successor to Joe
Gibbs when the Hall of Famer decides to
retire again. Gibbs is wrapping up his
second year of a 5-year contract. That
would put both contracts up at the same
time.

GRAPHIC=None Animal welfare groups in England have

called for a crackdown on the

trend of breeding so-called "designer
dogs".

ENG#=2 VO-NAT

VO-NAT It follows an increase in the demand

for cross breeds, like the Labradoodle
- a labrador/poodle cross - and a
Cockerpoo - a poodle/cockerspaniel
cross.

Chris Lawrence of the UK Dogs Trust
said they are concerned because these
sorts of trends encourage people to buy
dogs on impulse.

Lawrence is also concerned about the
influence 'pop stars' have on the
dog-buying public by encouraging a 'me
too' culture.

But dog breeders, say the new breeds
of dogs are adorable, easy-going with
no behavioral or medical problems.
