death, investigators are no closer to
finding out why the man suspected of
killing a Franklin County native
apparently hanged himself.

with Stephanie Bennett's death.
Yesterday afternoon he was found
dead in his cell at Raleigh's Central
Prison.
A prison spokesman say Planten

By all accounts- 23-year-old Stephanie
Bennett did *not* know the man, but
weeks before her death- police say

investigators believe it was Planten.
While a trial could have dragged on-

- ironically a lawyer in Michigan.
She said last time she visited
with her son in prison he seemed "very
depressed" and as if "he lost hope of
ever get out of there."

It seems Planten was also being
investigated for a 1999 shooting death

in connection with his son's death last
year - has plead to lesser charges.

VO-NAT Glovern Ray Phipps was facing
charges of involuntary manslaughter and
driving under the influence in
connection to an accident on Thompson
Memorial Boulevard.
Phipps' 5-year-old son, Ryan died
the next day from injuries suffered in
the crash.
The manslaughter charges were
dropped and the DUI was reduced to a
misdemeanor after the child's mother
requested leniency.
Phipps received a 12-month jail
sentence and will have to serve
90-days.
He also received a fine and
suspended license.

Police investigation.

A special prosecutor today
cleared Allen Taylor and Terry Alley of
any wrong doing.
The investigation dealt with
missing military surplus equipment at
the sheriff's office.
The equipment was stored at
Taylor's home, even though he'd been
out of office for nearly two years.
Special prosecutor Jerry Wolfe
says while all of these actions were
very unprofessional, unethical and
unwise, there is insufficient evidence
to prove that the actions of either one
of the individuals being investigated
were done with criminal intent.
