GRAPHIC=Hutcherson A new survey conducted for WDBJ-TV

shows a strong majority of Lynchburg
residents think mayor Carl Hutcherson
should resign in the face of federal
criminal charges.

VO-NAT Hutcherson was indicted last month

on seven counts of fraud, obstruction
of justice and lying to federal
authorities.

The two-term mayor has said he'll
remain on city council, but will not
seek re-election in May.

But a Survey USA poll taken last
night shows 68 percent of Lynchburg
residents feel Hutcherson SHOULD
resign, while just 28 percent think he
should stay.

The opinions split along racial
and party lines, however ...

81 percent of white residents feel
he should step down, while 61 percent
of blacks say he should stay on.

81 percent of Republicans want
him to resign, while Democrats are
almost evenly split on the issue.

The survey has a margin of error
of 4-point-2 percent.
