hoping to fill the last vacant seat in
the House of Delegates.

Tim Kaine.
A very abbreviated campaign
between Republican Mike Harrington and
Democrat Shannon Valentine has led up
to today's special election.
Harrington is a Lynchburg
businessman who also is the former head
of the Lynchburg Republican party.
Valentine is a local community
activist with a backrgound in corporate
public relations.
Neither has held elected office
before.
Today's winner will take office
when the session begins tomorrow in
Richmond.

investigating a robbery at the West
Stokes Convenience Store.
They say around 8:30 last night a
white male entered the store, pointed a
gun at the clerk and demanded money.
The suspect fled on foot with an
undisclosed amount of cash.

about the mysterious death of a
Virginia Tech freshman.

VO-NAT 18 year old Brian McCloskey was
found severely injured on a jogging
trail in early November- and died a
week later.

November believe a vehicle was definitely the
cause of McCloskey's injuries.
Police also said they have
impounded two vehicles and are waiting
for results to come back from the state
lab.

GRAPHIC=Marcus Vick Marcus Vick is once again in
trouble with the law.

VO-NAT Just days after he was booted from
the Virginia Tech football team, Vick
was charged with brandishing a firearm.
The alleged incident happened at a
McDonald's restaurant in Suffolk Sunday
night.
Marcus Vick is scheduled to appear in
court January 12th.
He has been released on a
ten-thousand dollar bond.

make an arrest in their first murder
case of the year.

VO-NAT It was early Saturday when the
murder happened-
34-year-old Ronald Scott Burchette
(burr-SHETT) was stabbed to death
inside this mobile home on Spruce Lane
near the Lynchburg city limits.
Police arrested Burchette's
girlfriend at the scene.
19-year-old Kathy Sue Wilkerson
is being held without bond on a murder
charge.
The couple reportedly had a
history of domestic disputes.

they've solved a series of church
break-ins.
Deputies arrested two husband and
wife teams this week from Bluefield and
Princeton, West Virginia.
The couples face numerous charges
including petty larceny and breaking
and entering.
Investigators believe the group
is responsible for stealing from at
least 7 churches in Virginia and West,
Virginia.
All four are being held without
bond.
Investigators say the group
confessed to breaking into the churches
because they needed money.

Galax isn't getting a warm welcome.

Many residents and business
owners say putting a shelter on Main
Street would increase crime and ruin
the quaint downtown area.
The rescue mission will help men
with drug, alcohol and sex addictions.
But folks who own businesses in
the historic area are upset.
They say the shelter should be in
a spot farther away from shops and the
high school.
Jeff Evans is proposing the
rescue mission.
He's a member of the Carroll
County Board of Supervisors, and he
would serve as the shelter director.
We have not been able to reach
him for comment.

investigating a fight that took place
over the weekend at a local Wal-Mart.

Police say they got several calls
around eight o-clock Saturday night
that about 20-to-50 kids were fighting
in the Valley View Store parking lot-
and shots were fired.
Officers say when they got there,
the teens took off in different
directions.
One of them was taken into a
custody -- a 16-year-old boy who police
say had a gun.
It appears the fight stemmed from
a heated argument INSIDE the store.

to the hospital after a police dog bit
him on the arm.
Police say the boy was hiding
behind boxes in the back of the Target
store, and did NOT respond to orders to
come out.

homeless after fire destroys their
home.

When firefighters got to Tim and
Gail Anderson's home yesterday, the
blaze had already taken over much of
the house.
Tim Anderson was working in the
garage at the time..
His wife's parents who live next
door discovered the fire.
No word on what caused the fire,
investigators will return to the scene
tomorrow.
For now, the Anderson's will be
staying in a nearby vacant house.

two Richmond families are back in
Virginia.

This Weekend Police caught up with 28
year old Ricky Gray and his 28 year old
nephew Ray Dandridge in Philadelphia
over the weekend.
They're accused of the New Year's
Day killing of musician 49- year old
Bryan Harvey, his wife and daughters.
A memorial was held outside the
store she owned in Richmond.
The suspects are also accused
of killing 56 year old Percyell Tucker,
47 year old Mary Baskerville and her 21
year old daughter .. on Friday.
Police found a car taken from
that home- and items they say link the
suspects to the murders.
Police believe robbery may have
been the motive.
