Shannon Valentine will be sworn
in later today after being elected to
the House of Delegates.

Shannon Valentine will represent
the 23rd District.

During a special election last
night, Valentine beat Republican Mike
Harrington by about two thousand votes.

She heads to Richmond vowing to
work with both Democrats and

Republicans.

This election got a lot of
attention because Democrats now pick up
a seat in the House of Delegates.

Republicans held this seat for
more than a decade and they are already
vowing to win it back.

However, Mike Harrington says he
won't be a candidate again.

proposed homeless shelter in downtown
Galax.

Monday night, dozens of concerned
residents and business owners packed a
city council meeting.

Jeff Evans wants to place the
shelter on South Main street in the
downtown area.

But several people are worried
the rescue mission will drive customers
away from downtown shops and increase
crime.

City lawyers say local zoning
ordinances don't even allow for a
homeless shelter and soup kitchen.

Evans has not submitted any final
plans for the idea, and told council
he's open to other locations.

have enough emergency departments or
hospital beds and recommends the state

crowded because uninsured patients are
forced to go to the emergency room to
treat a cold or the flu.

Nestle says it's giving up its
search for a spring site and bottled
water plant in Western Virginia.

death of 20-year-old Desiree Jennings.


Jennings was shot outside the
Annwil Grocery on Rugby Boulevard.
Jones chased her into the store where

Road area of Dublin.


She says he asked her to get in
his car to help him find a dog.
