address tonight.

session will feature a new face--
Shannon Valentine will be sworn
in later today after being elected to
the House of Delegates.

Shannon Valentine will represent
the 23rd District.
During a special election last
night, Valentine beat Republican Mike
Harrington by about two thousand votes.
She heads to Richmond vowing to
work with both Democrats and
Republicans.
This election got a lot of
attention because Democrats now pick up
a seat in the House of Delegates.
Republicans held this seat for
more than a decade and they are already
vowing to win it back.
However, Mike Harrington says he
won't be a candidate again.

indictment.

vote, the movement died a quick death.

GRAPHIC=Hold Criticism continues to grow for a
proposed homeless shelter in downtown
Galax.

Monday night, dozens of concerned
residents and business owners packed a
city council meeting.
Jeff Evans wants to place the
shelter on South Main street in the
downtown area.
But several people are worried
the rescue mission will drive customers
away from downtown shops and increase
crime.
City lawyers say local zoning
ordinances don't even allow for a
homeless shelter and soup kitchen.
Evans has not submitted any final
plans for the idea, and told council
he's open to other locations.

meeting the needs of its people.

released yesterday gave the
Commonwealth a D- plus for its
emergency medical- care system.
The report found Virginia doesn't
have enough emergency departments or
hospital beds and recommends the state
expand access to enhanced 9-1-1
services.
Emergency doctors say E-R's are
crowded because uninsured patients are
forced to go to the emergency room to
treat a cold or the flu.

job, Governor Mark Warner announced
hundreds of new jobs across the state.
Four of the announcements are in
our area.
A new company's coming to Wythe
County, creating 144 new jobs.
Amcor PET Packaging will
make plastic bottles for the beverage
industry.

more than 14-million dollars to expand
the New River Foundry.
The expansion will create 175

saying no to Western Virginia,
apparently because the water is not
good enough in Alleghany and Botetourt
Counties.
Nestle says it's giving up its
search for a spring site and bottled
water plant in Western Virginia.
The company says it couldn't
find any sites that were sure to meet
FDA standards.

the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Raphael Rashadd Jones was found
guilty in November of the shooting
death of 20-year-old Desiree Jennings.
Jennings was shot outside the
Annwil Grocery on Rugby Boulevard.
Jones chased her into the store where
she eventually died.
Yesterday a judge gave him life
plus 25-years.

abduction, Pulaski authorities are
advising parents to keep a close eye on
their kids.

A 12 year old girl says a man
driving a gray or dark-colored car
pulled up next to her in the Wilderness
Road area of Dublin.
She says he asked her to get in
his car to help him find a dog.
Sheriff's Department
investigators say the girl immediately
ran home.

but don't have any leads.

librarian to jail for a year.

Armstrong appealed his juvenile court
conviction... but was found guilty
yesterday afternoon in Circuit Court.
He was taken into custody
immediately after the proceedings.
Armstrong's meetings with the
girl spanned about nine months and
