At last count, the Saudi Interior
Ministry says at least 345 people have
died.

More than a thousand were injured
in a stampede that erupted during the
final day of the ritual.

The stampede occurred as tens of
thousands of pilgrims headed

toward a series of three pillars that
represent the devil.

The faithful pelt the pillars with
stones to purge themselves of sin.

A government spokesman says the
pilgrims began tripping over

dropped luggage, causing the large

(END SOT) LOCATOR: ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Still in handcuffs, his black hair now
turned grey, Mehmed Ali Agca took

his first steps as a free man for more
than 25 years.

Supporters shouted and tossed flowers

as he was driven away.

FILE:

Agca gained fame -- and brought his
native Turkey shame -- in 1981 when

he opened fire on Pope John Paul the
2nd as the pontiff rode through St

Peter's Square in an open car.

Bullets struck the Pope in the abdomen,
left hand and right arm....he

survived because no vital organs were
hit.

Agca's motives for the assassination
attempt remain a mystery -- he's

never said why.

He served 20 years in an Italian
prison, where Pope John Paul would

visit in 1983 and forgive him for the
attempt on his life.

(agca waves magazine)

On his release today, waved a Time
magazine cover showing their meeting,

headlined "Why Forgive?"

(STANDUP BRIDGE) CHARLIE D'AGATA/LONDON

BRITAIN'S CATHOLICS... LIKE CATHOLICS
AROUND THE WORLD ARE HOLDING FAST

TO THE CATHOLIC TEACHING OF FORGIVENESS
AND RECONCILIATION. AFTER ALL,

THEY SAY, IF AGCA WAS FORGIVEN BY THE
MAN HE SHOT.... THEY SHOULD

FOLLOW THE LEAD OF THE HOLY FATHER, AND
FORGIVE HIM.

(nats...rome) LOCATOR: THE VATICAN

It was a sentiment echoed at the
Vatican, by worshippers and clergy

alike.

nat sot up -- (Italian) Sister Regina

from Benin)

"We always need to pardon, she says, it
is an example that the Pope gave

us".

Forgiveness for Agca in Turkey is
another matter.

Many were outraged at the court's

decision to release him..he's also got

blood on his hands for the murder of a
Turkish journalist in 1979.

The Turkish justice minister has
demanded an appeal, and warned that

Agca could be jailed again, his freedom
short-lived.

And there's another matter -- Agca
dodged the draft in the 70's.... so

he could be called to do time in the
military.

Eastern Mennonite University, this
season he's still on the sidelines, but
at the High School level, as the head
coach of the girls team at Glenvar High
School

(MCELWEE BITE:)

McElwee's 2 seasons as the head
coach at E-M-U were very successful,
going 41 and 14 including an Old
Dominon Athletic Conference
Championship in his first year, but
with his family living in Montgomery
County that was a bigger draw than
winning.

(MCELWEE BITE:)

McElwee is not the only former
ODAC Head Coach from a season ago on
the sidelines for the Highlanders.
Richie Waggoneer the former Head Coach
at Lynchburg College is an assistant.

(WAGGONEER BITE:)

Both Coaches are enjoying their
latest challenge

(WAGGONEER BITE:)

(MCELWEE BITE:)

For the Glenvar players they have
the built in advantage of connections
to playing at the next level.

Principal Investigator Don Brownlee/Principal Investigator:
Our mission is called stardust, in part
because we believe some of the
particles from the comet are in fact
older than the sun, and planets. It
formed around other stars, we call them
stardust.

OQ=we call them stardust.

VO-NAT VO-NAT

Early Sunday morning, Stardust will
re- enter the earth's atmosphere at a
speed of 28- thousand miles per hour.

It'll be the fastest re- entry ever
for a spacecraft.

Scientists expect analysis of the
stardust samples will help them better
understand how the planets formed and
evolved over the past four billion
years.
