project in Roanoke is getting mixed
reviews.

in half by extending curbs and
installing traffic islands.
The goal is to make it so
uncomfortable you have no choice but to
slow down.
Some neighbors say it's now like
driving through an obstacle course.
The project is costing
250-thousand dollars and should be
completed by March.

settled a long-standing controversy in
Virginia over the execution of Roger
Keith Coleman in 19-92.

The tests confirmed Coleman's
guilt in the 1981 murder of his
sister-in-law, Wanda McCoy.
Coleman received national
attention as he insisted he was
innocent right up until the end.
Even after his execution,
anti-death penalty advocates pressured
the Commonwealth to use modern tests on
evidence from the crime.
Yesterday, the results put the
odds of the D-N-A belonging to someone
other than Coleman at 1 in 19 million.

evidence in the case retested called
yesterday's news "a bitter pill to
swallow."

Since 1988, when Jim McCloskey
became involved with the case he
believed Coleman was innocent.
He promised Coleman on the night
he was executed that he would do
everything he could to one day prove
his innocence.
Yesterday's results were not what
he expected, but McCloskey says now
that the truth is known-- he will
embrace it.

they'd hoped Coleman would be the
latest person to be "exonerated" by DNA
evidence.
They hope it will encourage
Virginia lawmakers to require evidence,

Patrick Henry High Schools new football
stadium has been rescheduled.
Mayor Nelson Harris moved the
hearing to Monday, February 6th at 7
p.m. after the city attorney's office
says the required public notice of the
meeting was too vague.

and two hopefuls said they will run
together as independents.

and her home to a litter of orphaned
puppies.

Ashley Hale rescued NINE puppies
just before New Years when the mother
was killed by a car.
When some local animal groups
wouldn't take them in, she decided to
do it herself.
Earlier this week, she gave up
five of them
Now Ashley is trying to find
homes for Marco....Sunny....Toby...and
Cheyenne.
Ashley says she feeds them about
six to eight times a day.
She also works at the Berry
Hollow Creek store in Salem and has
night school.

Roanoke police of two men wanted for
several armed robberies with in the
last month.

Just after midnight on Tuesday,
two men showed a gun and assaulted an
employee at this Wendy's on Hershberger
Road.
One of the men was wearing a
black jacket and a black cloth over his
face.

fur-lined hood and a red bandana
covering his face.

Officers believe the men may have
been involved in two December
robberies.

VO-NAT Roanoke Police have also
released these survelliance photos in
hopes of catching whoever broke into
the city market building early Monday
morning.
The burglar ransacked a number
of cash registers, stealing about a
hundred dollars worth of change.
It's unclear how the suspect got
into the market building because there
was no obvious damage to any locks.

changes to Rockbridge County's sign
ordinance have won the initial victory.

some businesses want to build bigger,
taller signs at interstate
interchanges.
Opponents fear it will create too
many distractions for drivers and ruin
the area's beautiful scenery.
The county's Planning Comission
apparently agrees.
It voted three to one late
Wednesday night against the change.
But County Supervisors have the
final say.
They're scheduled to vote on the
proposal January 23rd.

town of Blacksburg talking.

The beavers have set up shop
along Tom's Creek in the town's
Heritage Community Park and Natural
Area.
Moving the beavers is actually
against the law, so the town voted to
trap and euthanize them before they
have babies and cause major flooding
problems.

The town has hired an independent
nuisance wildlife company out of
Roanoke to take care of the beavers.
This is not an uncommon problem
in Virginia.
The USDA's Wildlife services
program kills about 300 nuisance
beavers every year.
