sophomore from Chesapeake, who rushed
for 647 yards this past season, will
return to classes eligible in the fall
for preseason camp. Ore will be in a
sling for two more weeks and was
already scheduled to sit out spring

OQ=...NEWS 7 SPORTS." << Three months into the season -
(END SOT) the Vipers are dead last in the UHL in

attendance averaging just over 15
hundred fans a game.

It's a far cry from the hockey
heyday just ten years ago when the
Express routinely attracted 6 to 8
thousand fans for every weekend game.

The core group of loyal hockey
fans who have been on board since
Claude Piche and Pierre Paiement graced
the Civic Center ice in the 70s are
still there - but the casual fan
looking for a night of entertainment
has mysteriously disappeared.

Dixon knew she faced an uphill
battle moving into a town where hockey

had been dead a year and on a financial
respirator before folding.

Many advertisers have stayed
away, as evidenced by the abundance of
empty spots on the dasher boards.

But Dixon insists the Vipers are
far from dead.

KRISTIN DIXON

In the past couple of weeks -
ticket prices have gone down and
attendance has gone up.

Assistant coach Daniel Berthiaume
- who starred in goal for six seasons
in Roanoke - thinks the fans could use
a little entertainment along with the
price cut - not to mention a few more
characters like John Brophy and Frank
Anzalone and Moose Morrisette.

Speaking of Nascar - the Vipers
are teaming up with the Martinsville
Speedway for Saturday night's game -
wearing race theme jerseys that will be
auctioned off after the game with
proceeds going to youth hockey and the
rescue mission. Mike Stevens News 7
