ran into a house last night.

Avenue.
Officers say 36-year-old John
Douglas Gillespie ran off the road an
into the front of the abandoned house.
Gillespie was not hurt, but
was charged with D-U-I.

considerable damage to a Roanoke home.

It broke out around midnight
at a home on Varnell Avenue in
Northeast.
Firefighters say flames had
already burned through one end of the
house by the time they got there.
No one was home at the time.
Investigators don't yet know
what caused the blaze, but say it
appeared to start near a fireplace in
the living room.

is one step closer to being built.

The county held a community
meeting last night to update residents
about the plan.
The new jail would be located on
42 acres just off Route 460 in Dixie
Caverns.
Nearby residents still have
plenty of concerns more than a year
after the project was announced.

be built must first be re-zoned.
The Planning Commission will
take that up February 7th before moving
to the Board of Supervisors February
28th.

drivers should be allowed to drive with
students on board made its way to
Richmond.

A House committee yesterday voted
unanimously they should be allowed to
drive faster.
The bill would increase the
current speed limit of 35 to 45 on
roads where the posted speed limit is
55 miles per hour.
On roads where the speed limit is
60 or higher buses could travel 55.
Supporters believe buses pose a
danger to students and other motorists
by driving so slow on major highways.
The measure will now go before
the entire House of Delegates.

his 200th birthday celebration.

week, but Governor Tim Kaine's already
in the national spotlight.
Congressional Democrats
announced yesterday that Kaine will
deliver the Democratic Response to
President Bush's State of the Union
Address on January 31st.
According to a news release,
Governor Kaine will discuss the
Democratic vision that focuses on the
priorities of all Americans.

done with parties that have gotten out
of hand at the Shriner's lodge.

Kevin Chambers and his family

This weekend, three men were shot
and injured in the parking lot of the
facility after a party.
Chambers says its an ongoing

a new crime for the Salem area.

A Domino's Pizza delivery woman
went to this house, along Bland Street
in Salem Sunday night.
She was expecting to deliver a
pizza, but instead was sprayed with a
stolen fire extinguisher and robbed..
The suspect ran away, but Police
have been able to track down the
business where the extinguisher went
missing.
The delivery woman was fired the
next day because Domino's says she was
carrying more cash than the company's
policy allows, making other drivers
targets.

firestation will make for a quicker
response time for those living in the
south end of town.

The town is going to build the
station at the corner of Airport Road
and Hubbard Street.
The building would not only
become the main firehouse for
volunteers it would also have a
community meeting room for the public.
Early estimates put the project
at around 1.9-million dollars.
So, far the town's only set aside
850-thousand dollars, but officials
plan to build the facility in phases.
Construction could begin later
this year.

to a suspect in the capital murder of a
Roanoke store owner before the case
proceeds any further.

Pritchard, the Second, told the judge
yesterday that they're not raising an
issue of his competence to stand trial
or questioning Pritchard's sanity at
the time of the offense.
At this point, they simply want a
psychiatrist to meet with Pritchard and
work up a social history on him.
Pritchard is accused of killing
Awad "Howard" KaWA, owner of Amelio's
Market.
