for the missing men in the West

them

"right now, we are concentrating our
efforts on fighting the fire, we

feel it is necessary at this point to
try to contain the fire."

Once the fire is under
control...rescuers will resume
searching...a huge

area that includes more than 6 miles of
tunnels.

sot: State mine safety chief Doug

Conaway (10:41:40)

"I know some areas where they are not,
now that we've examined, but

there is still a large area to search."

(MAP)

The mine, known as Alma Number One is
located in Melville---that's about

60 miles southwest of Charleston.

It all began late yesterday afternoon.
A carbon monoxide monitor went

off and 19 miners evacuated.

But with a fire blazing on a conveyer
belt, two miners were separated

from the fleeing group and were
trapped.

The missing miners are described as
young, but experienced.

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin has
been with the families in a local

church as they wait for news.

sot: Gov. Joe Manchin/D-West Virginia

"they understand the seriousness of
what we are dealing with. we are

still very hopeful."

This accident comes on the heels of the
Sago mine tragedy where 12 men

were killed and only one rescued.

The sole survivor, Randal McCloy,
remains in the hospital in a slight

coma.

That accident is still being
investigated.

And while Governor Manchin acknowledges
Sago is still fresh in

everybody's mind...he says this is a
different scenario....and one

everyone hopes has a much better
outcome.

ESPN Sean Singletary scored 18 for the :00 Cavs.

But the Heels erased a 10 point
deficit by halftime, thanks in part to
a rebound from Tyler Hansbrough.

In the second half, J-R Reynolds
had 16 points for the night.

Virginia pulled the upset 72- 68
over Carolina, improving to 3 and 2 in
the ACC.

OQ=...NEWS 7 SPORTS." << Three months into the season -
(END SOT) the Vipers are dead last in the UHL in

attendance averaging just over 15
hundred fans a game.

It's a far cry from the hockey
heyday just ten years ago when the
Express routinely attracted 6 to 8
thousand fans for every weekend game.

The core group of loyal hockey

fans who have been on board since
Claude Piche and Pierre Paiement graced
the Civic Center ice in the 70s are
still there - but the casual fan
looking for a night of entertainment
has mysteriously disappeared.

KRISTIN DIXON/VIPERS OWNER

Dixon knew she faced an uphill
battle moving into a town where hockey
had been dead a year and on a financial
respirator before folding.

Many advertisers have stayed
away, as evidenced by the abundance of
empty spots on the dasher boards.

But Dixon insists the Vipers are
far from dead.

KRISTIN DIXON

In the past couple of weeks -
ticket prices have gone down and
attendance has gone up.

Assistant coach Daniel Berthiaume
- who starred in goal for six seasons
in Roanoke - thinks the fans could use
a little entertainment along with the
price cut - not to mention a few more
characters like John Brophy and Frank
Anzalone and Moose Morrisette.

Speaking of Nascar - the Vipers
are teaming up with the Martinsville
Speedway for Saturday night's game -
wearing race theme jerseys that will be
auctioned off after the game with
proceeds going to youth hockey and the
rescue mission. Mike Stevens News 7

:00 In other Tech news, running back
Branden Ore is not enrolled in school
this semester, instead opting to
rehabilitate his surgically- repaired

shoulder at home.

The redshirt sophomore from
Chesapeake, who rushed for 647 yards
this past season, will return to
classes eligible in the fall for
preseason camp.

Ore will be in a sling for two
more weeks, and was already scheduled
to sit out spring practice.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Bradshaw
from Bluefield has had another run- in
with the law at Marshall.

The running back has been accused
of stealing another student's video
game system.

He was arrested and charged with
nighttime burglary and petty larceny.
