morning house fire in Roanoke.

Investigators are still looking
into the cause of the blaze, but say it
happened about 2:30 this morning at a
house in the *45-hundred block of Eden
Drive.*

Inside, firefighters found
85-year-old Dolores Zimmerman dead.

As Susan Bahorich tells us,
neighbors tried to help, but there was
nothing they could do.

one person was found dead in the home.



Investigators say they did find a smoke
detector, but aren't sure if it was

determine if the smoke detector found
inside the house was working.

It's something so important, that
Roanoke Fire-EMS is now offering to
install new smoke detectors in every
home in the city.

Virginia' program.

The city received three-thousand
smoke detectors as part of a grant.

crews had to cut a woman free from her
car this afternoon.

This happened around two o'clock

in the southbound lanes of Route 220 --
near the Franklin County line.

Crews on the scene say they used
the jaws of life to cut a woman free
from her SUV -- after she ran off the
road, and hit a tree.

Fire officials say the woman was
in critical condition when she was
taken to the hospital.

Police are investigating.

two miners in West Virginia.

They had been missing since
Thursday, when a conveyor belt caught
fire in the Alma mine.

The men are identified as
33-year-old Don Bragg, who had 15 years
of mining experience -- and 47-year-old
Ellery "Elvis" Hatfield -- who's been a
miner for a dozen years.

The miners became separated
Thursday as their 12-member crew tried
to escape from the Alma mine in
Melville, about 60 miles southwest of
Charleston.

The rest of the crew escaped
unharmed.

Virginia to see how well they're
insulated from lightning.

Southwest Virginia Delegate Bud
Phillips has introduced a bill that
would require all underground coal
miners to have a wireless
communications system that could help
them during an explosion or collapse.
