FORD'S TURNAROUND PLAN IS DUBBED THE
"WAY FORWARD" BUT IT LEAVES BEHIND
THOUSANDS OF WORKERS...
Bill Ford:company ceo
Its a strategy that calls for
sacrifices at all levels of the
company.
FORD TODAY ANNOUNCED SOME DRASTIC
CHANGES: OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS....
IT PLANS TO CLOSE 14 PLANTS IN NORTH
AMERICA, INCLUDING ASSEMBLY PLANTS
IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ATLANTA
GEORGIA, WIXOM, MICHIGAN AND BATAVIA,
OHIO -- AT A COST OF NEARLY 30 THOUSAND
JOBS.
Ford: These cuts are a painful last
resort and I am deeply mindful of
their impact.
THIS IS FORD'S SECOND MAJOR OVERHAUL IN
TWO YEARS - WHAT'S DIFFERENT
THIS TIME - FORD IS ALSO GIVING A
TUNEUP TO ITS PRODUCT LINE...ROLLING
OUT FIVE NEW VEHICLES AND A REDESIGNED
MINIVAN.
(STANDUP)alexis christoforous
WHILE FORD IS STUCK WITH ABOUT A
MILLION CARS AND TRUCKS A YEAR IT CAN'T
SELL - IT CAN'T MAKE ENOUGH OF ITS
POPULAR REDESIGNED MUSTANG - PROOF
THAT FORD CAN PRODUCE A WINNER.
FORD IS ACTUALLY MAKING MONEY - EXCEPT
IN NORTH AMERICA - WHERE IT LOST
1.6 BILLION LAST YEAR. AND FOR THE
FIRST TIME IN 19 YEARS, FORD GAVE UP
ITS TITLE AS AMERICA'S BEST SELLING
AUTO BRAND.
(Sot: David Cole, Auto Industry
Analyst)
it's almost a make or break time and I
think they're treating it that
seriously inside. They may not have not
have another chance.
BUT ANALYSTS QUESTION WHETHER FORD'S
PLAN IS SIMPLY TOO LITTLE AND ABOUT
A YEAR TOO LATE.
