(SOT-Angelic Hendrix/Smoker)

"I tried but it's a hard habit to
break."

WELL NEW RESEARCH MAY PROVIDE HER WITH
SOME ADDED MOTIVATION.

IT SEEMS ANGELIC'S (ann-juh-leak's)
RISK OF GETTING LUNG CANCER IS

HIGHER THAN OTHERS.... SIMPLY BECAUSE
SHE'S AFRICAN AMERICAN.

THE STUDY IN THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF
MEDICINE FOUND.... WHICH SMOKERS

GET THE DISEASE..... PARTLY DEPENDS ON
THEIR SKIN COLOR.

(SOT-Dr. Andrew Evans/St. Luke's

Roosevelt)

"there's huge discrepencies in the
incidence of lung cancer in different

population groups."

(gfx)

THE STUDY LOOKED AT FIVE ETHNICITIES
AND FOUND AFRICAN AMERICAN SMOKERS

FACED THE HIGHEST RISK OF LUNG CANCER.

THEY WERE FOLLOWED BY NATIVE HAWAIINS,
WHITES, JAPANESE AMERICANS AND

THEN LATINOS.

(STANDUP: Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS
NEWS/Miami, FL)

THE BIG QUESTION IS WHY.

WHY WOULD SMOKERS OF ONE RACE BE AT A
HIGHER RISK OF LUNG CANCER THAN

ANOTHER.

(nats)

DOCTOR ANDREW EVANS SAYS THERE COULD BE
SEVERAL REASONS.

ONE THEORY IS: GENETIC DIFFERENCES MAY
CAUSE SOME RACES TO ABSORB MORE

OF THE TOXIC CHEMICALS FOUND IN
CIGARETTES.

(SOT-Dr. Andrew Evans/St. Luke's

Roosevelt)

"there are multiple other disease sites
where genetics and race

certainly play a large role in the
development of cancer so it would be

quite logical that this would happen in
the smoking population as well."

THIS FINDING COULD LEAD SCIENTISTS TO
SEARCH FOR THOSE GENETIC

DIFFERENCES.... IN TURN GETTING A
BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW LUNG

CANCER WORKS.

BUT ONE THING WE ALREADY KNOW FOR SURE.

OVERALL, SMOKING IS STILL VERY BAD FOR

EVERYONE.... NO MATTER WHAT RACE

THEY ARE.

OQ=Hometown Hoops Weekly. << For the gym to be packed at
(END SOT) Rockbridge County is quite an

achievement. Headed into this season
the the Wildcats had never posted a
winning record in basketball during the
schools history. Barring an unforeseen
collapse that streak will come to an
end this season.

The man behind the turnaround is
head coach Brian Freeland, who brought
to Lexington a different style that the
kids were used too.

(MAYO:14:23:05)

(FREELAND:14:17:28)

Talent always makes coaches
better and Freeland is reaping the
rewards of playing a lot of youngsters
a season ago in his first season on the
sidelines for the Wildcats when they
went 6 and 17 but the improvement was
evident.

(Early: 14:25:52)

(FREELAND:14:19:59)

It should be no real suprise that
former Alleghany Mountaineer is doing
well as a coach, considering who he has
been a pupil under. He played for
Jimmy Smith, worked under Ron Bradley
at Radford during college and has

coached with Allen Cantrell at Floyd
County, Kevin Johnson at Magna Vista
and Mark Cartolaro at Altavista.

(FREELAND 14:18:06)

(STANDUP: those plays must be working
the Wildcats are 11 and 4 and 8 and 2
in the Valley District, they are
currently in Second place trailing only
Robert E. Lee. If Rockbridge can stay
where they are in the standings they
have a good shot to earn a berth in the
Regional playoffs, something that would
have far reaching effects (Grant
Kittelson, Hometown Hoops Weekly)

(FREELAND:14:19:25)

The Wildcats have 6 regular
season games remained before their
district tournament begins, Grant
Kittelson Hometown Hoops Weekly.

GRAPHIC=BAM The Virginia Cavaliers won their

10th game of the season last night by
beating Miami, and more importantly

they improved to 4 and 2 in the ACC -
equaling the number of wins they had
all of last season in the Conference.

Unfortunately, Roanoke native and
former Roanoke Catholic superstar -
J.R. Reynolds - took an ugly fall.

ESPN-U Last Night Reynolds was undercut on this :00 drive to the hoop early in the second
half when he came down his head snapped
back off the hardwood.

He left the game and never
returned last night.

UVa officials would only say
today that JR is being evaluated and
that they'll probably know his status
for Saturday's game at Duke.

Much more at the top of the hour
- Jean will be right back - Take care
everybody.

The sign was recently raised more
than two feet to offer better
visibility from the street.

In addition, crews have had to
repair problems aggravated by recent
high winds and cold weather.

The sign is now owned by Center
in the Square, and officials there
hope to have it up and running in the
next few days.
