police he may have hit Virginia Tech
Freshman Brian McCloskey.

Freshman was found lying unconscious on
a walking trail.
He died from his injuries five
days later.

November 2005 warrant obtained by the Roanoke Times,
:08 Aaron Pierce told investigators he left
a party McCloskey had attended and
instead of driving through the parking
lot, he took a shortcut across the area
where McCloskey was found.
Pierce told police he was driving
a Ford Excursion he had borrowed from
his roommate Cameron Johnson, who is
also the general sales manager of Magic
City Ford in Roanoke.

has been charged with having sex with
one of her students.
41-year-old Karen Susan Patton is
facing three sex related charges.
According to
investigators...Patton had contact with
the 13-year-old student on January
17th.
They also say the two were
contacting each other with instant
messages on the Internet.
Patton is being held in the New
River Valley jail.

damaged three buildings.

Fire crews were called to 813 Day
Avenue around four this morning.
Heavy smoke and flames were
pouring out of the house when
firefighters got there.
One fireman fell through the
floor and was treated for minor
injuries.
The buildings on either side of
the house also caught fire but
sustained only minor damage.
No one was inside any of the
homes at the time of the fire.
No word on the cause.

Last Friday Last Friday's fire in Roanoke has
claimed another life.
A second man who was burned in
the fire on Thomason Avenue died today.
53-year-old Joseph Beckner was
being treated at the UVA Medical
center.
The other victim, Scott Dooley,
died yesterday.
Both men were working with a
propane furnace when the fire started.

World Champion figure skater Michelle
Kwan enters the skating rink as if
it is any training day, but this day is
different..
A U-S Olympic Committee arrived in Los
Angeles to evaluate her fitness and
make sure a recent groin injury has
healed well enough for her to compete
at the Olympics in Turin next month.

"It is the decision of this US Figure
Skating monitoring group that Miss Kwan
did demonstrate her fitness to compete
two Olympic level competitive programs
and reaffirmed her status as a member
of the 2006 US Figure Skating Team."

positive and feeling good, injury free
so right now just going for it."

"Kwan won the silver medal in 1998 and

her accomplished career."

competition.... missed almost the
entire skating season this year due to
injuries.
She petitioned to make one of three
slots on the US women's Olympic team.
Now, fans hope the five-time world and
nine-time US champion can make a come
back and come home with the gold.

"If I was in her shoes, I'd be
screaming and jumping up and down. I
hope she deserves it and I know she
does."
Whether Kwan's third try turns out to
be the charm, young skaters say she
still shines as an inspiration...
because she never stopped reaching for
