the death of a Virginia Tech student.

A Blacksburg man apparently told
police he may have been the one who hit
Brian McCloskey.

Times a Blacksburg man told police in
December quote,
"it had been in the back of his mind
that he may have hit him."

Joseph McCloskey was most likely hit by
a vehicle, the night he was found lying
unconscious on this walking trail.
According to the search warrant, Aaron
Pierce told police he had attended a
party that same night and instead of
driving through the parking lot, he
took a shortcut across the area where
McCloskey was found.
The warrant also says Pierce was
driving this Ford Excursion he had
borrowed from his roommate

today, was so police could search

McCloskey in his Northern Virginia home
yesterday. At the time he did not know
about the latest developments in the
investigation, but had this to say
about what happened to his son.

damaged three buildings.

Fire crews were called to 813 Day
Avenue around four this morning.
Heavy smoke and flames were
pouring out of the house when
firefighters got there.
One fireman fell through the
floor and was treated for minor
injuries.
The buildings on either side of
the house also caught fire but
sustained only minor damage.
No one was inside any of the
homes at the time of the fire.
No word on the cause.

Last Friday Last Friday's fire in Roanoke has
claimed another life.
A second man who was burned in
the fire on Thomason Avenue died today.
53-year-old Joseph Beckner was
being treated at the UVA Medical
center.
The other victim, Scott Dooley,
died yesterday.
Both men were working with a
propane furnace when the fire started.

Corned Beef and Company on
Jefferson Street has temporarily shut
its doors.
The Department of Alcoholic
Beverage Control charged the restaurant
with multiple violations ranging from
serving alcohol to customers who were
already intoxicated, to not having
areas of the restaurant sufficiently
lit.
In a statement released by Corned
Beef owners say "While we feel unfairly
targeted in this instance, we will
always strive to abide by the
regulations at each of our ABC licensed
facilities".
Corned Beef is set to re-open
next Wednesday in time for lunch.

a former teacher at Scott Memorial
Middle School with having sex with one
of her students.
41-year-old Karen Susan Patton is
facing three sex related charges.
According to
investigators...Patton had contact with
the 13-year-old student on January
17th.
They also say the two were
contacting each other with instant
messages on the Internet.
Patton is being held in the New
River Valley jail.

the Roanoke Valley rushed to join the
recovery effort.
Today, many people from our area
are still offering aid.

high school just outside of PIttsburgh,
is harassed for wearing a Denver
Broncos jersey with John Elway's name
and number on the back.
The student says one of his high
school teachers made him sit in the
middle of a circle on the floor while

at him.
Elway has decided to try to make it
up to the young man by sending him a
recliner from his Elway line straight

Deron Washington has been suspended by
Virginia Tech for 1 game. That means
the Sophomore forward will miss the
Hokies game against Wake Forest this
weekend.

Washington was ejected from
Tech's loss to Duke last night for
kicking Lee Melchoni. Deron apologized
to both Melchoni and Coach Mike
Krzyzewski after the game.
This is just another issue that
the Tech team is dealing with, Coleman
Collins has left the team to be with
his father who is in critical condition
at a hospice outside of Atlanta. Also,
Allen Calloway a Hokie Senior has
cancer and hasn't been able to play
hardly at all this season. These are
just a few of man and all the off the
court issues may have bled onto the
court last night.

the floor in Tuesday Night's win over
Miami. Reynolds left the game and did
not return. Doctors evaluated the
former Roanoke Catholic Star on
Wednesday and Thursday. J.R. did
travel with the team this afternoon as
they headed down to Durham for
Saturday's game. A determination on
his playing status will be made before
