early morning house fire has been
contained.

This Morning The blaze started at 809 Day
Avenue and had briefly spread to two
neighboring houses.
We have now learned that the
first floor of the house where the fire
originated was occupied.
We're told those residents were
able to get out.
Firefighters are concerned about
a female resident who's unaccounted
for.
Neighbors, however, say she's
staying with relatives elsewhere.
No injuries have been reported.
Our crew on the scene reports
that Day Avenue is closed between 8th
Street and Ferninand Avenue.

The Henry County Board of
Supervisors went over the results of a
study analyzing what impacts the
reversion would have on both the County
and the city of Martinsville.
The attorney hired to do the
study, Richard Cranwell, says it would
mean a little return for the City and a
big loss for the County. Specifically,
a deficit that would increase taxes for
County residents by 35 percent.
Mainly because the County would
take over all the services currently
provided by the City. And that means
the closures of city offices and all
city schools.

Martinsville city council addressed
concerns over the possiblity of
reversion.

Many residents said they were
surprised to hear that city officials
were talking about reversion.
Council members yesterday said
they understood their reaction, but
reassured residents that reversion was
just one of many options they were
looking at to keep Martinsville on the
right economic track.
They said no decisions would be
made without a referendum.

Several dozen workers who inspect
and deliver trucks at the Volvo plant
in Dublin have lost their jobs.

were told they no longer had jobs
Wednesday night.
The company sold its operation to
A-T-T...Auto Truck Transport, which is
a union shop.

Virginia's General Assembly building.

Delegate Jack Reid of Henrico
County purchased a gun several years
ago after receiving some unsettling
phone calls.
Yesterday morning, shortly before
nine, he walked into his office in the
General Assembly building and began his

law professor is helping Iraqi lawyers
and judges become more aware of human
rights.

VO-NAT Melissa Waters is one of dozens
of lawyers from more 15 countries that
are helping train Iraqi law
professionals in the Middle East.
Many Iraqis who are arrested for
crimes are NOT aware of what they can
and can't say.
Waters says because of the
training her group provides, some
Iraqis have been let out of jail.
And when Baghdad is more secure,
Waters and her colleagues hope to speed
up their efforts.

charged 53-year-old James Alton Motes
with the murder of his sister Nancy
Wingfield.

This Week Wingfield has been missing since
early January, and for three days this
week, authorities worked to unearth
human remains buried in five separate
locations.
They now believe Motes strangled
his sister on January 2nd and then
dismembered her body.
Neighbors are still dealing with
the discovery of Wingfield's remains,
but say progress in the investigation
comes as a relief.

crime he didn't commit, now a Lynchburg
man is considering legal action.

the armed robbery of the Zip
convenience store on Lakeside Drive
January 15th.
Late Monday, another man ...
Randall Scott Mason ... confessed to
the crime after he was charged with
robbing a bank on Timberlake Road.
Police say Ayers and Mason
resemble each other, which led to the
store clerk picking Ayers out of a
photo lineup.
