Roanoke firefighters are battling a
fire at an abandoned house.

Authorities say the fire started at
809 Day Avenue, but had briefly spread
to two neighboring houses.

So far, there are no injuries.

A News 7 crew is on the scene, and
we'll have information as soon as it
becomes available..

GRAPHIC=Murder Invest. The search for Nancy Wingfield

has lead Henry County investigators to
her brother.

Yesterday, they obtained a
warrant charging 53- year- old James
Alton Motes with first degree murder.

This Week Wingfield has been missing since
early January, and for three days this
week, authorities worked to unearth
human remains buried in five separate
locations.

They now believe Motes strangled
his sister on January 2nd and then
dismembered her body.

Neighbors are still dealing with
the discovery of Wingfield's remains,
but say progress in the investigation
comes as a relief.

He won't be arrested until he's
released from the hospital, perhaps
sometime next week.

Attorney Richard Cranwell says bottom
line, Martinsville is enjoying a below
average tax rate but spending more than
large towns which means the city is not
in a poor financial situation. Cranwell
adding the city wouldn't see very much
in return but the County would be hit
with a big loss. More specifically a
deficit that would warrant a 35 percent
tax increase for residents of the
County. Mainly because the services the
City is currently responsible for would
become the responsiblity of Henry
County and that includes the schools.

*** Euguen Kotulka, It would have an
educational impact of our students,
very imporant to study, it's something,
how it would affect the size quality,
very important for a decision for a
community to make.....

But schools aren't the only thing
that would be closing in the City of
Martinsville, so would city offices,
which means a loss of jobs.

*** Andy Parker, I think it's a moot
issue becasue I think the city study is

farily close to county and i think they
realize there's not enough cost
savings....

interview with one last statement,
saying Henry County has a good thing
going, why change it? Instead
suggesting the County and City of
Martinsville work together to try to

Council members yesterday said
they understood their reaction, but
reassured residents that reversion was
just one of many options they were
looking at to keep Martinsville on the

in jail for a crime he didn't commit.

January 15th.

Late Monday, another man ...
Randall Scott Mason ... confessed to
the crime after he was charged with
robbing a bank on Timberlake Road.

resemble each other, which led to the
store clerk picking Ayers out of a

has lead Henry County investigators to
her brother.

Yesterday, they obtained a
warrant charging 53- year- old James
Alton Motes with first degree murder.

This Week Wingfield has been missing since
early January, and for three days this
week, authorities worked to unearth
human remains buried in five separate
locations.

They now believe Motes strangled
his sister on January 2nd and then
dismembered her body.

Neighbors are still dealing with
the discovery of Wingfield's remains,
but say progress in the investigation
comes as a relief.

The Henry County Board of Supervisors
went over the results of a study
analyzing what impacts the reversion

would have on both the County and the
city of Martinsville.

The attorney hired to do the study,
Richard Cranwell, says it would mean a
little return for the City and a big
loss for the County. Specifically, a
deficit that would increase taxes for
County residents by 35 percent.

Mainly because the County would
take over all the services currently
provided by the City. And that means
the closures of city offices and all
city schools.

Authorities in Roanoke say an early
morning house fire has been contained.

This Morning The blaze started at 809 Day Avenue,
but had briefly spread to two
neighboring houses.

We have now learned that the first
floor of the house where the fire
originated was occupied.

Those residents were able to get out.

Firefighters have not been able to
check out the second floor, although
neighbors say no one lived in the upper
level of the house.

No injuries have been reported.

Our crew on the scene reports that Day
Avenue is closed between 8th Street and
Ferninand Avenue.

A tree limb fell yesterday afternoon

on Auburn Avenue knocking power out for
about 15 hundred households including
the entire campus at Radford.

The outtage only caused minor
disruptions since classes continued in
the dark.

restore power a little over a hour
after the lights went out.

contained an early morning house fire.

They say the blaze started at 809 Day
Avenue and had briefly spread to two
neighboring houses.

No injures have been reported.

The search for Nancy Wingfield
has lead Henry County investigators to
her brother.

Yesterday, they obtained a
warrant charging 53- year- old James
Alton Motes with first degree murder.
Investigators believe Motes strangled
his sister on January 2nd and then
dismembered her body.

to Lynchburg crashed into a logging
truck on Route 29 near Charlottesville
