Sayers is 32 and was raised in Dublin.
His parents didn't doubt for a minute
he always knew what he wanted out of
life.

*19:36:43-52 he always wanted to help
people, even on our road, if someone
needed help, he always had to stop

*19:42:40-43 even as a kid, he offered
to mow the lawns of people next door.

As sayers wears his uniform with pride
tonight, it's not the first time he's
been recognized. But his last

courageous effort is the one his
parents are most proud of. Joel was
involved in the rescue of 167 people in
New Orleans, just hours after Hurricane
Katrina hit.

*19:40:22-35 he rescued a lady, and she
told him her husband was inside and was
paralyzed and couldn't get out, he told
her he would try to get her husband out

With no access, Joel promised her
husband he'd come back. And Joel did
come back, with an axe, to chop through
the roof to save the man. That act
alone, initiated every helicopter to
carry an ax, saving even more lives.

*19:41:47-51 I'm so proud of him, I'm
proud of the entire Coast Guard

And so is the President of this United
