Chief Gary Harmon has a entire folder

on just how serious the alcohol problem
is at colleges around the country. He
says many other localities are also
stepping up enforcement.

In 2004 City Police had 640 alcohol
violations.

Last year the number almost doubled to
1251.

Police attribute most of the increase
to a new grant that allowed them to pay
for overtime enforcement of alcohol
laws.

The students will keep the
petition posted for about two weeks and
then they plan to take it to the city
council.

Jean, Police say since October
they've had complaint forms at the Dean
of Students Office for people to fill
out and turn in, if they have an issue
with the police department.

So far, no one has made an
official complaint.

The students say that's because
no one has really known about the
forms.

Ferry carrying has gone down in the red
sea.

The ship was carrying up to 15-
hundred passengers. So far some have
been rescued but as Charlie D'Agata

reports, officials fear a huge loss of
life.

first pictures of the scene..
Survivors.. Close to 2-hundred.. Pulled
from the red sea alive..

But with about 15-hundred passengers on
board. The fear is most have drowned.

The ferry was en route from Saudi
Arabia to Egypt when it VANISHED from
radar screens in rough seas.

On board.. mostly workers returning
from Saudi Arabia or Mulsim pilgrims
returning from the hajj..

The ferry was also carrying 220
vehicles.

There was no SOS, no mayday, but the
British Navy DID pick up the ship's

AUTOMATIC distress beacon...then,
quickly lost contact.

IT REALLY PAINTS A GRIM SPECTER OF A
CATASTROPHE OF ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE
PROPORTIONS HAPPENING SO FAST THAT NO
ONE HAD TIME TO ACTIVATE THE IN-BUILT
SYSTEMS ON THE BRIDGE ITSELF.

The US Navy and british navys have both
offered assistance.. It's unclear if
egypt is going to accept the help.

Officials say four Egyptian ships HAD
reached the scene, but some TEN hours
after disaster struck.

Egyptian maritime officials say the
ship was carrying LESS than maximum
capacity, and had recently passed
safety tests for seaworthiness, but the
swift sinking and an apparent lack of
lifeboats have caused concern among
officials that the vessel was in
violation of safety requirements.

women found a cat staying in her tree.

The cat refused to come down and
the woman actually named the cat.

It was eventually removed and given to
Animal Control.

Its been there for the past four

been showing bad signs of aggression,
and if it doesn't improve by Monday, it
will not be adoptable.

the NFL.

Former Salem Spartan and Virginia
Cavalier Dennis Haley was in town today
helping the Red Cross stockpile its
blood supply here in the winter months.

Haley is now on the Baltimore
Ravens roster as a linebacker, but
always jumps at the chance to give
back.

Wednesday Karen Gallupe (GAL-up) was :00 wounded Wednesday morning when two men
tried to rob the Exxon station at the

corner of Orange Avenue and Hollins
Road.

Gallupe was shot in the jaw, and
may have suffered nerve damage, but
today her father told News 7 she's
doing well under the circumstances.

Police have not made any arrests
in the case.
