Currently, the county only bills
patients if they're picked up by a
career rescue squad.

In the future, the bill could come
for pickups made by volunteers as well.

A system that's already in place in
most areas, including Raonoke County,
where the billing brings in an
estimated one and a half million
dollars each year.

The good news is typically 97
percent of the cost is billed to the
patient's insurance provider.

And if the patient can't afford to
come up with the rest, it's a write
off.

If Franklin County approves the
plan, the money collected would be used

mainly for buildings to house
volunteers.

the next 10 years....and part of that
plan could be billing for all ambulance

ENG#=3 VO-NAT

*CG locator Franklin Co.

Currently the County only bills
patients if they're picked up by a
career rescue squad. In the future, the
bill could come for pickups made by
volunteers as well.

A system that's already in place in
most areas, including Raonoke County,
where the billing brings in an
estimated one and a half million
dollars each year.

The good news is typically 97 percent
of the cost is billed to the patient's
insurance provider. And if the patient
can't afford to come up with the rest,
it's a write off.

If Franklin County approves the
plan, the money collected would be used
mainly for buildings to house
volunteers.

as it could be...a lot of it comes from
a lack of housing for volunteers..What
that means, is if you call 9-1-1
volunteer rescue squads leave from
their house, instead of all leaving
from one central location. Billing
patients county-wide for ambulance
rides, could help solve the problem.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 22:04:17-30 most of the systems have

done that, started with career only,
worked bugs out, turning some of the
negative attitude

RUNS= (END SOT)

But the idea is met with a little bit
OQ=of the negative attitude of skepticism....

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 21:57:03-17 when you go to someone's

home and ask for insurance, kind of
kills the spirit.

RUNS= (END SOT)

How it would work is a person is picked
OQ= up in the ambulance, taken to the

hospital, no questions asked. The
paperwork is sent to the person's
insurance and a bill for the co-payment
is later sent out to the patient. In
Roanoke County, where a similar plan is
already in effect, insurance usually
covers almost 97 percent of the cost.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 4:16:06 -17part of premium, just like

accident and tow truck, in premium,
every insurance has deductible for
ambulance,

RUNS= (END SOT)

If someone can't pay the remaining
OQ= cost, the rescues squads write it off.

...

Again, Franklin County is mulling the
idea over...It already bills patients
if they're picked up by career rescue
squads, this would just add billing for
volunteer rescue squads. The most
important thing to stress, is anyone
who calls 9-1-1 will always be served.

One proposal that may not fly is
a plan to put farmers' stalls in the

Vendors oppose that... but say
they're looking forward to
improvements to the market area.
