(END SOT) Hospital officials say 78-year old

Austin attorney HARRY WHITTINGTON is
recovering nicely AFTER BEING SHOT BY
Vice-President Dick Cheney WHILE
HUNTING ON A TEXAS RANCH.

Dr. David Blanchard/Medical Emergency
Dept. Director

THERE HAVE BEEN NO COMPLICATIONS,
PROGRESS IS EXCELLENT. HE IS TALKING,
AWAKE, ALERT.

BUT THE MAJOR FALLOUT MONDAY IS OVER
WHY IT TOOK 24 HOURS FOR THE PRESS TO
FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED.

SCOTT MCCLELLAN:white house
spokesperson

IT'S IMPORTANT ALWAYS TO GET
INFORMATION LIKE THIS OUT QUICKLY AS
POSSIBLE BUT ITS ALSO IMPORTANT TO
ENSURE THAT FOCUS IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE
AND THAT IS MAKING SURE MR. WHITTINGTON
GETS THE CARE THAT HE NEEDS.

The White House says cheney left it up

to Katherine Armstrong.. The owner of
the ranch.. To report the mishap to her
local press.

Whittington was about 30 yards away
when the vice president fired his
28-gauge pellet shotgun.

KATHERINE ARMSTRONG/RANCH OWNER:
UNFORTUNATELY MR. WHITTINGTON WAS IN
THE LINE OF FIRE AND GOT PEPPERED
PRETTY WELL.

Jennifer Donelan: MISTER CHENEY DID
TAKE TIME TO VISIT MISTER WHITTINGTON
HERE AT THE HOSPITAL BEFORE LEAVING FOR
WASHINGTON.

There was some question as to whether
sheriff officials were allowed to speak
to Mr. Cheney before he left. the
secret service says the vice president
was interviewed. deputies confirmed
they did speak to him early sunday.

SCOTT MCCLELLAN/WHITE HOUSE
SPOKESPERSON

MY UNDERSTANDING THE secret service did
take the appropriate action TO INFORM
LAW ENFORCEMENT

For now the vice-president isn't
commenting...leaving more questions
than answers. JD, Corpus Christi, Texas

Being inducted along with Owens,
was Trey McCoy a college standout at
Virginia Tech, Murray Cook a Salem
native who was a Salem Pirates Batboy
and now runs a groundskeeping business,
the fourth member is Sam Webb who is
regarded as the father of modern day
athletics at Ferrum.

The only disappointing part of
the night was that Lee Smith who was
suppose to be the featured speaker did
not show up. Smith got snowed in
Saturday in Atlanta and did not take
his flight into town on Sunday.
