GRAPHIC=accident Blacksburg Police say alcohol was


a factor in an accident that sent a
Virginia Tech student to the hospital.


They say 21-year-old Brad Gignac
was traveling North on Chickahominy
Drive, when he lost control of his
vehicle on the snowy road around 3:20
yesterday morning.

He then ran off the road, struck
a sign and then hit 21-year-old
Virginia Tech student Daniel Abramson
who was walking in the area.

Abramson was taken to Montgomery
Regional Hospital with moderate, but
non-life threating injuries.

Gignac who is also a Virginia
Tech student, was arrested for D-U-I
and is being held in the Montgomery
County Jail on a one-thousand dollar
bond.

afternoon in downtown Roanoke: some
brief snow showers and gusty winds, but
nothing that caused any problems.

For the most part the mess from
Saturday's snow storm stayed on the
more rural roads.

murder of an Appomattox County mother.

Sept. 27, 2005 The body of Dorothy Harris was
discovered last September inside her
home on Oakville Road.

Authorities say she had been
shot to death.

The investigation continued until

early yesterday morning when police
arrested 35-year-old Thomas Douglas
Groves of Bedford and charged him with
Harris's murder.

They say Groves is the father
of one of Harris's five children and
had been a suspect for some time.

He was arrested when he showed up
at the murder scene yesterday morning.

after he attempted to rob two
convenience stores.

Both robberies happened within
seven minutes of each other yesterday
morning.

Police say Garet Michael
Fitzgerald was armed with a hunting
knife when he robbed the Stop-In on
Memorial Avenue AND the Community
Grocery store on Elm Avenue.


Fitzgerald was taken into custody
*minutes* after the two robberies.

The owner of Community Grocery
says he was just glad it was HIM
working yesterday and not his wife.

Last night several hundred people
gathered at Virginia Tech to watch the
popular T-V show Extreme Makeover..Home
Edition.

It showcased the story of Carol
Crawford-Smith, and the thousands of
volunteers it took to demolish her
Blacksburg home and rebuild it in seven
days.

Smith was a former professional
dancer, and she has a dance studio
where she teaches.

Six years ago she was diagnosed
with multiple schelorsis...making it
very difficult for her to get around.

Smith's new home is one level and
built for her special needs.

A year's worth of events started

church's cornerstone which was laid in
1926.

It was rumored the stone contained
a time capsule, but members only turned

today.

AARP workers had been using
