apartment by firefighters.

The fire at the corner of
Patterson Avenue and Ninth Street in
Roanoke broke out just before eleven
last night.

Crews rescued one man from a
first floor apartment and took him to
Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment
of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters also rescued a
cat and a dog, though a second dog
died.

Investigators weren't yet sure
what caused the fire.

woman is dead after someone shot her in
her own home.

night in this home on Ashley Drive.

Authorities say 22-year-old
Meghan Lee Price was sitting in her
living room, when someone broke into
her home and shot her once in the back
of the head.

Price's boyfriend, 26-year-old
Jamie Dantoni Dillard, told authorities
he got his gun and fired back.

disaster if development is allowed in a
flood plain area.

At a planning commission Monday
evening, an engineer for the state of
Virginia talked about the four dams in
the area of the Black Diamond Ranch.

Developer, Hunter Company
Subdivision wants to put nearly 100
homes in the John's Creek area, but

some argue building them downstream
from four dams is asking for disaster.

Especially considering none of
the four dams is up to standard and the
county would be responsible if the dams
were to break.

One Craig County resident tells
us what it comes down to ultimately is
those who are in favor of the
development versus those who are
opposed.

Court ruled that governments can take
private land for economic development.

After lengthy debate, delegates
yesterday amended and advanced a bill
that supporters believe better defines
what public use *is* in Virginia.

It says land cannot be taken
under the power of eminent domain for
private development, an increase in the
tax base or employment.

The bill also makes it easier for

land owners to fight eminent domain in
court.

downtown Roanoke have been delayed at
least six months.

Museum officials say there are
two reasons for that--trouble finding a
general contractor and rising
construction costs related to Hurricane
Katrina.

As a result, the final price tag

of intent with Centex Construction to
build the new facility.

Barring any other problems,
construction should begin next month.

Museum officials acknowledge the
new facility won't be ready now until
spring 2008.

Now, the Charlotte Observer
reports Pillowtex has struck a deal
with its creditors, allowing the
company to issue final checks averaging

restaurants has been approved by the
Virginia Senate.

local governments to decide whether or
not to impose stricter regulations and
was voted down.

After being brought up for
reconsideration, Senator Brandon Bell

amended the bill to include a state-
wide ban.

That's something he says
restaurant owners prefer.

The Roanoke County lawmaker
believes the bill is necessary to
protect non- smokers from second hand
smoke.

The measure narrowly passed on a
21- to- 18 vote.

People caught smoking in
restaurants could be fined up to 100-
dollars the first time.

After that the fine would go up
to 250- dollars.

The measure will now be
considered by the House of Delegates.
