restaurants.

Earlier this week, a bill passed
the State Senate that would forbid
smoking in all bars and restaurants.
It's now goes to the House of
Delegates where it's expected to face
an uphill battle.

assessments.

owners have been assessed.
Some are seeing increases of more
than 70 percent.
They fear if property taxes
continue to rise, people won't move to
Rockbridge County.

The county could choose to
reassess more often than every five
years.
That might mean more frequent
property tax hikes, but each increase

top-selling dog treat could be
dangerous.

reportedly being fed Greenies -- which
are supposed to clean teeth and freshen
breath.
Some vets say the treats don't
break down easily and can get stuck in
a dog's esophagus or intestine.

carts is bringing nearly 200 new jobs
to Danville.
Unarco will move into an
old Dan River building by April.
The governor's office says
Unarco will be hiring welders and
assemblers for the new operation.

Virginians, the state's Museum of
Natural history in Martinsville is
about to make some history of its own.

VO-NAT Two years ago the state made a
deal with the museum... raise two-
million dollars and we'll match it.
The museum did-- and is now ready
to start building several new world-
class exhibits to be housed inside its
new building still under construction.
Once everything is up and
running, the museum is expected to
generate 15- million dollars a year for
Southside's economy.
That, combined with the all but
certain future of a New College
Institute, has area residents looking
up.

home.

The Blacksburg New School held a
ground breaking ceremony yesterday for
a brand new building.
About 67 kids from the area are
enrolled in the school which is
celebrating its 35th anniversary.
The school has grown so much in
the past few years, teachers say this
new building and location are really
needed.

popping up all over Blacksburg.

It's part of the Blacksburg
Partnership's new "Gobble de Art"
program.
75 fiber glass birds will be
decorated and painted by local artists
and placed around town.
The first bird was put up
yesterday in front of the town
municipal building.
Blacksburg is hoping the birds
will become a local tourist attraction
this summer.
The statues will eventually be
auctioned off to raise money for the
partnership.

her mother, a Carroll County woman is
now in a state medical hospital.

nine puppies were rescued after their
mother was killed in a car accident.

College student Ashley Hale
rescued the pups, she took care of
four, one was adopted right away and
the other four went to fellow student,
Stephanie Sult.
After raising Scratchy, Brewser,
Runty and Elizabeth for nearly six
weeks,
Stephanie admits she can't give
them the attention and care they
deserve.
So she is in the process of
trying to find a home for her furry
friends she's become so attached to.

Valley View Mall's expansion.
Despite the fact it could cause
more traffic congestion and fewer
parking spaces.

comment right now- but preliminary
site plans filed with the city's
planning department outline a new
development on the east side of the
mall.
What is now a parking area
between J.C. Penney and Sears would
become The District at Valley View
Mall, a complex of stores with at least

requirements.
Everyone we spoke with said they

and restaurants at the mall.
