hospital after an early morning
accident on Route 460 in Bedford
County.

after being hit by a pick-up truck.

VO-NAT It happened around 6:30 last
night on Route Eleven just south of
Buchanan.

15-year-old boy had just gotten off the
activity bus and was crossing the road
when he was hit by the truck.
He was taken to Roanoke
Memorial Hospital with what police
called critical injuries.
His name has not been released.
Troopers say the bus's lights
were flashing at the time of the
accident.

condition of Parry McCluer Middle
School.
The building is clearly showing
its age since parts of it are between
fifty and eighty years old.
The school board is now studying
whether it's cheaper to build a new
school or renovate the existing one.

Parry McCluer to be a landmark.

businesses take steps so they don't
become the latest target in a rash of
robberies.

A seminar, held at the Hotel
Roanoke, gave tips to better secure
businesses both inside and outside.
For example, make sure businesses
are well lit, windows aren't cluttered
and use surveillance cameras and height
charts so police can get good
descriptions on robbery suspects.
Turn out wan't as high as police
hoped, of the 1200 invitations, only 18
people showed up. But of the people
there, most took what police had to say
to heart.

family rebuild their home.

Paul Bowyer (BOE- yer) saved his
granddaughter Katy from their burning
house a year ago this week.
Bowyer died from his injuries and
Katy suffered burns over 55-percent of
her body.
This week, volunteers through
Blue Ridge Home Improvements are
tearing down the old home and building
a new one.
Many of the volunteers are former
students of Paul Bowyer, who was a
longtime shop teacher at Blacksburg
High School.
The home will be officially
demolished on Saturday and rebuilt by
June.

visit from his favorite football coach.

Coach...Frank Beamer stopped by the
Showalter Center to wish Al Guarino
(gwa-Reno) a happy birthday.
Guarino is a long-time member of
the Hokie Sports Club and still attends
weekly meetings.
Folks at the retirement center
threw him a big party with a Hokie
theme.
Guarino says even though he was
born and raised in New York City, the
folks in the New River Valley have
treated him like family.
Guarino worked as a tea tester at
J-C Whitney Tea Company for more than
50 years.

GRAPHIC=Murder Invest. Court documents show police have
a 17-year-old suspect in the case of a
double murder in Roanoke.

Last Friday Last week police found the bodies
of 46-year-old Deborah Pearl Vaugan and
53-year-old Brenda Marie Wright inside
an apartment at Tinker Creek Manor
apartments.
According to the documents,
police went into another apartment and
seized a pair of jeans with bleach
stains.
They also took swabs of red
stains from the top of the stair well.
Police also took D-N-A and prints
from the suspect.

Starting out with six employees

building's food court, Corned Beef and
Company grew to be named small business
of the year in 2002.
