The streets of New Orleans were
filled today with marching

bands, brightly decorated floats and
flying plastic beads.

Five *Mardi Gras* parades rolled
through neighborhoods left mostly
untouched by Hurricane Katrina.

They were the first of the major
parades, which will continue through

Officials decided to allow a
scaled-back celebration this year
despite the widespread destruction
caused by Katrina.

The only time the city has
cancelled Mardi Gras was during World
