GRAPHIC=Shooting A Virginia State Police trooper
is dead after a gun accident in Clarke
County.
The trooper's name has not been
released pending family notification.
Police say two troopers responded
to a single-vehicle crash yesterday
afternoon.
The two occupants of the truck
were arrested on alcohol-related
charges.
As the truck was being moved
shortly before two o'clock - a gun
inside the vehicle went off, striking
one of the troopers.
That trooper was flown to an area
hospital where he later died.

destroyed a Blacksburg home and changed
the lives of one family.

February 2005 When the fire started, Paul
Bowyer bow-yer pulled his
granddaughter, Katy from the burning
home.
But Paul didn't make it.
He died a short time later from
his injuries.
Katy suffered extensive burns.
Since that time, Katy has fought
through a hard recovery, and the family
has tried to move on.

therapy or H-R-T may not be
dangerous for certain women.

Millions of women stopped H-R-T after a
2002 study found it raised the
risk of heart attack and stroke.
But researchers now think that danger
may be reserved for postmenopausal
women.
The new study looked at estrogen only
drugs.. and found that for newly
menopausal women between 50 and 59..
they may actually lower the risk of
heart disease a little.

Scientists investigating Alzheimer's
say the disease usually appears
later in highly educated people- but
once it does it advances more
quickly.
In their study each additional year of
education was related to a higher
percentage of mental deterioration.
Researchers are working on a theory
that suggests that people with
higher brain skills and function seem
more able to delay the onset of
illness and its symptoms.. but once
Alzheimer's does manifest so much of
the disease has accumulated that they
decline faster.

The government has come up with
guidelines for what is and isn't "whole
grain."
Cereal grains like corn, rice, oats and
wheat will have to be intact,
ground, cracked or flaked before they
can be called "whole grains."
Foods that tout "seven-grain" or
"multi-grain" on their labels don't
necessarily contain the heart healthy
fiber.
The government's dietary guidelines
recommend three servings of whole
grains daily to cut the risk of heart
disease and type two diabetes.

throughout the state. Snow flurries
dusted areas around San Francisco
yesterday. Two feet of snow is expected
to fall in the Lake Tahoe area today.

VO NAT The U.S. isn't the only place to
see a taste of winter. Let's head over
seas. First to Russia, where 59 inches
of snow fell this week, closing a 12
mile stretch of roadway. Parts of
Russia have seen record snowfall this
winter with more on the way today.

VO NAT Finally, to China, where more
than 2,000 people were stranded in
vehicles as heavy snow fell over the
the weekend. Strong winds swept through
creating snow drifts larger than most
of the cars. Emergency workers
distributed food and water to people
trapped in cars and buses, while road
crews worked to clear dozens of snow
drifts.

fire destroyed a Blacksburg home and
changed an entire family.

granddaughter Katy from the burning
home.
But Paul didn't make it.
He died a short time later from
his injuries.
