(END SOT) When banned Austrian ski coach Walter

Mayer crashed into a police

roadblock after he fled across the
Italian border on Sunday, it was the

latest dramatic event in just 24 hours.
On Saturday, Mayer touched off

the FIRST EVER anti-doping raid by
police on Olympic athletes.

SOT: Gisellle Davies, Communications

Director, IOC

The IOC fulfilled its resposibiltity
last night to conduct anti-doping

controls on athletes who might have
been under his influence.

Italian police raided the Austrian
teams' lodgings, waking up skiers

and biathletes..taking them for drug
tests, hours before some were due

to compete. Blood analysis equipment
and hundreds of syringes were

seized. One athlete threw a bag
containing needles and medication out

a window, while Mayer left the scene in

a minivan.

D'Agata Bridge: CHARLIE
D'AGATA/PRAGELATO, ITALY

The raids here in Italy were triggered
by Mayer's mere presence at the

games. He was banned from the Olympics
following a blood-doping case at

the 2002 games in Salt Lake City, where
he was alleged to have performed

blood transfusions.

Austrian officials say they had severed
all ties with Mayer, that he was

in Italy in a private capacity and had
no official connection to the

team. But they admit he did spend at
least one night with the skiers.

SOT: Dick Pound, Chairman, World

Anti-Doping Agency

I do think the message is that the
sportsmen and the public authorities

are prepared to work together and can
work together to try and keep the

competions clean. 1:52:28

Test results are pending for the
athletes and the materials confiscated

in the raid. Against the backdrop of
the most stringent drug controls

in Winter Games' history, Mayer is
being investigated by the Italians,

who treat doping as a criminal
offense..

OBESITY IN U-S ADULTS HAS DOUBLED IN

(SOT- Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar/Pennington

Biomedical)

"we saw every single time the infected
animals get a lot--- more fat."

SO IS THIS COMMON VIRUS HAVING THE SAME
EFFECT IN HUMANS?

(SOT - Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS NEWS/Miami,

FL)

It's not as crazy as it sounds. We've
known for a while that other

viruses--like HIV, or Epstein Barr--can
cause a dramatic loss of body

weight.

So it would make sense that others can
make us gain weight.

(gfx)

DOCTOR DHURANDHAR TOOK 5-HUNDRED BLOOD
SAMPLES FROM BOTH LEAN AND OBESE

PEOPLE.

HE FOUND 30 PERCENT OF OBESE PEOPLE
TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE INFECTION,

WHILE ONLY 11% OF LEAN PEOPLE DID.

(SOT- Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar/Pennington

Biomedical)

"The antibody positive subjects had
significantly greater body weight."

AND OTHER SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THEY HAVE
FOUND 'OTHER' VIRUSES WITH A

SIMILAR EFFECT.

BUT THE RESEARCH IS ONGOING.

IT'S NOT YET KNOWN HOW THE VIRUS MAY
CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN.... OR HOW

SIGNIFICANT OF A ROLE IT PLAYS IN
OBESITY.

HOWEVER, THE DISCOVERY HAS CAUGHT THE
ATTENTION OF OBESITY DOCTORS.

(SOT- Dr. Tom Bass/Memorial Regional

"I would say fascinating stuff,
probably raises more questions today

than it answers."

IF SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS CAN BE
ANSWERED IT COULD ONE DAY CHANGE THE

WAY WE TREAT OBESITY.

MIKE ON CAM MIKE ON CAM

GRAPHIC=BAM Good afternoon everybody and

welcome to the Monday ticker.

We get things started with a
little recap of last night's finish at
Daytona.

The First race of the 2006 Nascar
Season is in the books and the most
unlikely of winners Jimmie Johnson
prevailed to capture his first Daytona
5-hundred.

Yesterday Johnson took the 48 car to
victory lane after leading the final 14
laps. He held off the field in a
Green-White-Checker finish. The man

leading Johnson's team was Darian
Grubb. The Floyd County native was
filling in for Chad Knaus who was
tossed out of Daytona for cheating
during qualifying. Grubb is now 1 for
1 in winning races as a crew chief.

ANCHOR ON CAM The Cup cars now head to
Califorina for the Auto Club 5-hundred
and Grubb may be the man in charge
again, it is expected that NASCAR will
suspend Knaus for an additional 3
races.

By the way Grubb not only is from
Floyd, but he graduated from Virginia
Tech and really cut his teeth at the
old New River Valley Speedway working
on Jeff Agnew's crew.

GRAPHIC=BAM Friday afternoon there were

conflicting reports coming out of
Charlottesville conerning the future of
Cavaliers' linebacker Ahmad Brooks.

:00 This afternooon a report in the
Cavalier Daily - the UVa student
newspaper clears some of the confusion
up for us.

The report says that Brooks
failed a drug test within the past two
weeks and that Al Groh has told the
team that Brooks will not take part in
spring practice.

However, Brooks status with the
Cavaliers for the fall apparently has
not been determined.

Last Friday - a story on Rivals
dot com said Brooks had been dismissed
from the team, but UVa responded by
saying he had not.

Brooks was an all-American in
2004, but played in just six games last
year due knee, ankle and back injuries.

appear to be some problems for
Dolphins' running back Ricky Williams.

The Miami Herald says Williams
has tested positive for drug use. If
it's true, Williams faces at least a
one-year suspension from the NFL.

This would be Williams' fourth
violation. He tested positive for
marijuana use three previous times. If

Williams is suspended, he remains
property of the Dolphins and his
contract will not run out while he is
serving the suspension.
