trying to get into Virginia Tech.

The university received

18-thousand-969 freshman applications
by its January 15th deadline.

That's a 7-point-5 percent
increase over last year.

to help enforce a state law.

This bill requires vets to report
any animal that is not licensed.

All vaccination information would
have to be forwarded to the local
treasurer who would then charge the
pet's owners.

Supporters say it helps promote
responsible dog and cat ownership by
giving residents an easy way to comply
with the law.

We paid a visit to a local
veterinarian.

He believes this probably would
have no effect on whether owners take
their animals to the doctor, but he's
not sure about the added task.

say a plan that's underway to combine
the city's elementary schools will help
increase diversity.

only be TWO elementary schools, with
grades Kindergarten through five.

Right now, the three elementary
schools are broken up into grades
K-through-two and three-through-five.

The plan is to place about

However this weekend it was the
scene of a murder.

One resident of Allison Avenue
says she heard what sounded like a
gunshot around three Sunday morning.

Six-hours later investigators
were called to the alley behind their
house after the body of a man had been
found.

Police say he had been shot.

Some neighbors say they're
concerned now about their safety and
will increase security around their
house.

In the meantime, the victim's
name has not been released.

rescued by firefighters in Wytheville.

VO-NAT Eric Berta was stuck in a chimney


at a construction site for more than 13
hours on Saturday.

Firefighters had to cut away
bricks and pull him out by his feet.

They say Berta was extremely cold
but not seriously injured.

Several firefighters told News 7
this was the most bizarre rescue
they've ever performed.

life a State Trooper from Bath County.

killed after a gun accidentally went
off in Clarke County Saturday.

The trooper was working an
accident scene

on its side.

As the truck was being towed a
loaded gun inside fired.


Manion was struck in the chest
and died a short time later.

Deeds remembered the trooper as a
sports enthusiasts who loved children.
