The life of Michael Morales...a
convicted murderer and rapist was

spared...at least
temporarily....overnight....when two
court appointed

anesthesiologists refused to
participate in the scheduled execution.

A prison spokesman read a statement
from the doctors.

sot: Lt. Vernell Crittendon/San Quentin

State Prison Spokesman

"what is being asked of us now is
ethically unacceptable."

The specialists had been brought in to
minimize pain during the

execution by lethal injection, but were
concerned by the wording of a

court order that required them to
intervene in the event that Morales

woke up or appeared to be in pain.

sot: Crittendon again

"Mr. Morales was as expected, relieved
to hear that he would be leaving

the death watch cell and now will be
returning to the cell on death row."

(brown standup bridge)

This was the first time
anesthesiologists were scheduled to be
present

during an execution in California.
They were brought in after Morales'

attorneys argued that the state's 3
part lethal injection constituted

cruel and unusual punishment.

sot: Bradley Winchell/Victim's brother

"I think they ought to bring back
hanging or electrocution for this type

of crime."

But relatives of the victim have no
compassion for Morales. The now

46-year old.. was convicted of killing
17-year-old Terri Winchell in

19-81 by beating her with a claw
hammer, raping her and leaving her body

in a vineyard.

Morales' death warrant expires at one
minute before midnight pacific

time... his execution now rescheduled
for 7:30 tonight. Without the

anesthesiologists present, prison
officials will use a different mixture

of chemicals to carry out the
execution.

:00 Yesterday afternoon a report in
the Cavalier Daily - the UVa student
newspaper - says that Brooks failed a
drug test within the past two weeks and
that Al Groh has told the team that
Brooks will not take part in spring
practice.

However, Brooks' status with the
Cavaliers for the fall apparently has
not been determined.

Last Friday - a story on Rivals
dot com said Brooks had been dismissed
from the team, but UVa responded by
saying he had not.

Bernstein to coach the secondary -
filling their last vacancy.

He's been coaching for 37 years
and he was an assistant at Tech from

staff.
