JEAN ON CAM JEAN ON CAM

GRAPHIC=Torino Olympics The womens bobsled team has added

another Olympic medal to the growing

list of U.S. achievements.

But as Charlie D'Agata reports, it was

a strange twist of fate that even
allowed this team to compete.

Even as they rocketed across the finish
line...they could hardly believe

the result.

(nat SOT - VALERIE (no time for font)

I WAS LIKE, OH NO ARE WE GONNA

GET CRUSHED.

(nat SOT - SHAUNA (no time for font) I

JUST SAID, OH PLEASE GOD LET

THAT BE ENOUGH.

And it WAS.... With Utah's Shauna
Rohbock in the driver's seat - and San

Francisco's Valerie Fleming in the
rear.... the US bobsled team took

SILVER.

(NAT SOT - under video - VALERIE )

EVERYONE'S SCREAMING AND CHANTING

U-S-A.

At the podium, they stepped up, and
WRAPPED up in the American flag.

Shauna says she was outraged when she
heard ONE reporter call it ' a

cliche.'

SOT - SHAUNA ROHBUCK/BOBSLED SILVER

MEDALIST

THAT'S WHAT YOU DREAM ABOUT WHEN
YOU'RE A LITTLE KID, YOU DREAM THAT

YOU CROSS THAT FINISH LINE AND YOU CAN
PUT THAT FLAG AROUND YOUR

SHOULDERS AND YOU CAN SAY, I AM AN
AMERICAN AND I JUST WON A MEDAL FOR

MY COUNTRY!

ON CAMERA BRIDGE: CHARLIE
D'AGATA/TORINO, ITALY

BUT SHAUNA'S DEDICATION TO PATRIOTIC
DUTY ALMOST ..ENDED.. HER OLYMPIC

DREAM. DURING INTENSTIVE TRAINING, SHE
GOT A CALL FROM THE UTAH

NATIONAL GUARD: PACK YOUR BAGS, YOU'RE
GOING TO IRAQ. .......STRANGELY,

IT WAS AN OLD SOCCER INJURY THAT
ACTUALLY KEPT HER ON TRACK.

(SOT - SHAUNA ) AS AN ATHLETE, YOU

DON'T WANT TO HAVE INJURIES, BUT OH,

(CHARLIE: THIS ONE PAID OFF) SHAUNA:
OH, THANK GOD FOR THAT ONE.

A torn rotator-cuff...classified by the
military as "NON-DEPLOYABLE";

serious enough to keep her out of Iraq
-- but minor enough to keep her

IN her bobsled.

Other Olympic athletes have haven't
been so lucky -- three-time medalist

speedskater Chris Witty, pulled out of
competition Wednesday because of

a groin injury -- apparently ENDING her
Olympic career.

The departure comes a week after
injured ice-skater Michelle Kwan ended

HER lifelong quest for gold. Twists
of fate -- turning some away ---

and spinning SILVER to others.
