Just one week ago, Governor Tim Kaine
paid a visit to our area. Concerned
residents showed up to voice their
opinions on the Governor's plan to
raise money.....The consensus at that
meeting was something definitely needs
to be done about the highways...The
poll results confirm that consenses is
not just at the meeting, it is felt
around the state. In fact, 86 percent
of Virginians agree spending more money
on highway construction is very or
somewhat important.

But where there's a slight difference
from the meeting to the poll
results....is whether taxpayers are
ready to bend their budgets to help pay
for the road improvements...At the
meeting, no complaints...

shares that mentality....Some options
are favored more than others.
Especially letting those faced with
traffic fines pick up the tab. 65
percent say that's the best way to
raise the money. Now keep in mind,
those polled could chose more than one
answer.

54 percent support using the State's
General Fund. Others, including the
Governor, oppose this option, because
it would take away from other things
like education. A third of those polled
think higher car sales tax is the way
to go...

But the two options that are the
least popular....higher license and
registration fees and a higher gas tax.

The Allstate Foundation, along with
Roanoke County Schools, police and

for "Partnering for the Privilege."

The program hopes to take some common
sense logic and open the lines of
communication between teens and their
parents when it comes to driving and
driving attitudes.

Jennifer Turner and Kendra Bush are on
an advisory panel made up of student
across the country- and are working to
turn their friends' attention to the
issue.

A government advisory panel is
recommending kids be vaccinated against
rotavirus. The common illness causes
diarrhea and dehydration. The Centers
for Disease Control still has to sign
off on the plan. If the agency does,
babies will be given three doses of the
oral vaccine over six months.
