last night -- it happened after a woman
was shot at Wal-Mart.

Rodney Startz of Radford, before he
turned himself over to police around 11
Saturday night.

Startz started the standoff at 4
p-m by barricading himself in his house
in West Radford along Robert's Street.

Neighbors like George Ferguson
were evacuated.

Police say Startz was armed with
a handgun, and threatened to hurt
himself.

He did talk to police by phone
and face to face.

Startz was also in communication
with family and friends.

But police didn't take any
chances....an armored vehicle and a
SWAT team were brought in for backup.

Police arrested Startz and
charged him with first degree murder in
the shooting death of 46 year-old Donna
Angelo...a Wal-Mart employee.

Police say the two were in some
type of relationship.

altercation with Roanoke City police
last night.

Police responding to gun call on
the 800 block of Westside Boulevard
Northwest- and attempted to remove a
suspect from his vehicle.

That's when police say an
officer's gun fired -- hitting the
suspect.


The victim -- whose I-D hasn't
been released --suffered non-life
threatening injuries.

A press release was issued, but
calls to the Roanoke City Police
department have not been returned.

SCARE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS -
AUSTIN, AS A PRELIMINARY TEST ON A
POWDERY SUBSTANCE FOUND THURSDAY IN A
DORM ROOM, CAME BACK POSITIVE FOR THE
DEADLY TOXIN RICIN. THE GRAINY, CLUMPY
SUBSTANCE WAS DISCOVERED BY A STUDENT
IN A ROLL OF COINS AT THE MOORE-HILL
DORMITORY. TWO STUDENTS ARE CURRENTLY
BEING TREATED FOR POTENTIAL EXPOSURE,
THOUGH NEITHER HAVE SHOWN ANY SYMPTOMS.
THE CITY'S MEDICAL DIRECTOR SAYS THE
FACT THAT THE POWDER WAS CLUMPED
TOGETHER DIMINISHED THE RISK. "the
exposure risk we feel was low." HEALTH
OFFICIALS SAY SYMPTOMS SUCH AS
DIFFICULTY BREATHING, FEVER, NAUSEA,
VOMITING AND SWEATING WOULD NORMALLY
OCCUR WITHIN SIX TO EIGHT HOURS OF
EXPOSURE. UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS
EVACUATED THE DORM BUILDING AND MET
WITH STUDENTS TO TRY AND ALLEVIATE
FEARS, "It's a little
terrifying....hope everyone is ok."

WHILE HAZMAT CREWS CARRYIED OUT
DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES. THE FBI IS
LEADING THE INVESTIGATION AND WORKING
WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT. "the
likelihood of it actually being ricin
in this situation is highly unlikely."
RICIN IS EXTRACTED FROM CASTOR BEANS
AND IS USED AS A DEADLY WEAPON THROUGH

Researchers say the unhealthiest eaters
are people who drink large

amounts in one sitting.

However, people who drink in moderation
tend to have good diets.

Every u-s infant could be getting a new
vaccine.

A government advisory panel is
recommending kids be vaccinated against

rotavirus.

The common illness causes diarrhea and
dehydration.

The Centers for Disease Control still
has to sign off on the plan.


If the agency does babies will be given
three doses of the oral vaccine

over six months.

Obese elderly or disabled patients are
now eligible for a variety of

surgical weight-loss procedures under
Medicare.

Previously, Medicare patients could
only receive gastric bypass

surgery.. but the new rules open the
door to laparoscopic adjustable

gastric banding.

Eligible patients must have tried but
failed with other weight loss

options, have at least one
weight-related medical problem and have
a

high body mass index.

Californians are preparing for
what could be wet and windy few days.

spent much of Saturday placing sandbags
around their homes in preparation for
three back to back storms scheduled to
hit the area.

tonight, another Monday and a colder
storm on Wednesday.

Officials also warned residents living
along the delta in the Sacramento
region to watch for possible leaks, or
breaks along levees. Residents are
taking every precaution after a New

dollars worth of damage.

altercation with Roanoke City police
last night.

Police responding to gun call on
the 800 block of Westside Boulevard

Northwest- and attempted to remove a
suspect from his vehicle.

That's when police say an
officer's gun fired -- hitting the
suspect.

The victim -- whose I-D hasn't
been released --suffered non-life
threatening injuries.

A press release was issued, but
calls to the Roanoke City Police
department have not been returned.

Police arrested a man they say
shot and killed an employee at Wal-Mart
in Fairlawn.

starts of Radford to surrender.

It all started at about four
o'clock -- when Startz barricaded

himself in his house in West End
Radford.

His neighbors were then

Police weren't taking any chances
-- with a SWAT team and armored vehicle
on hand.

They say Startz was armed with a
handgun, and threatened to hurt
himself.

He did talk to police by phone
and face to face.

Startz was also communicating

with family and friends.

He's held at the New River Valley
Jail without bond.

Police responded to a call at a
Lucky Break convenience store in
Danville after reports of a fight in
the parking lot.

Police found two men -- one had a

contributed to a brush fire in last

night in Hillsville.

VO-NAT Firefighters responded to a home

on Forest Oak Drive in the Woodlawn
area.

They say someone was burning
trash in a 50-gallon drum next to
several old cars, buildings and a large
wood pile.

The fire did damage several cars.

The owner of the home -- Eugene
Sawyers -- said he did NOT even know
there was a fire until he saw the
lights from the trucks.

That's when he ran outside and
started to use a garden hose to put out
the flames.

No injuries were reported.
