with killing his ex- girlfriend at the
Fairlawn Walmart may have been
harassing her prior to Saturday's
incident.

VO-NAT 45 year old Rodney Gene Startz is


charged with first degree murder.

Police say he walked into the
Fairlawn Walmart around 3:30 Saturday
afternoon and shot 46 year old Donna
Jean Angelo.

Startz was arrested less than a
month ago and charged with making
obscene and harassing phone calls to
Angelo.

Organizers with the New River
Valley Women's Resource Center say
harassment often leads to violence.

9 o-clock last night.

Police say a black male entered
the store, displayed a gun, and
demanded money from the clerk.

The suspect then fled the scene.

help in Botetourt County after a string
of robberies.

Last Thursday, Scott's Thrift
Store near Troutville was robbed.

Then early Sunday morning, less
than a mile away, the Virginian
Markette was broken into.

Both robberies had similarities,

mainly cigarettes were stolen.

One local owner says more can be
done to protect businesses.

Sheriff's Deputies say, they have
told area stores to make sure security
systems are working properly.

They're also increasing patrols
in the area.

The old Red Lion Inn on Prices
Fork Road may be turned into an
apartment complex.

The Virginia Tech Foundation took
over the property after the hotel shut
down in December of 2004


A developer is considering
building 225 apartments with a
clubhouse, a small hotel and retail
space.

Foundation members say they got
dozens of proposals for the site, but
liked this idea the best.

bring bears back to a Richmond park.

Four-year-old Alison Valentine
used her parent's yard sale over the
weekend to raise money for Maymont.

The park's two black- bears were
put down last week to be tested for
rabies.

That after one of the bears bit a
child who stuck his hand through the
chain linked fence surrounding the
animal's habitat.

The child was treated and
released, neither bear tested positive
for rabies.

In an effort to help the park buy
new bears, Valentine sold her *teddy*
bears to raise money.

help keep tabs on registered sex
offenders.

And the County's Sheriff's Office now
has 50 thousand dollars to make it
work.

The program identifies sex offenders
and where they live. These red dots are
actual addresses of each of the 73 sex
offenders in Bedford City and County.

Officers say this will be a vital
tool if a child goes missing because
automatically they can go to these
homes and start eliminating suspects. A
tool that's important considering the
recitovism rate of sex offenders is
more than 90 percent.

County mother may have saved her and

her child from a burning house.

The fire broke out around 10:30
yesterday morning at this home on
Peter's Pike Road near Burnt Chimney.

Officials say the fire started in
the back of the house near a dryer, but
was quickly controlled.

They say the woman living there
took the right steps to get her and
her 18-month-old child out safely.

Officials ruled the fire an
accident -- but are still trying to
determine the cause.

County may have been started by sparks
from a passing train.

This is what it looked like as
about twenty firefighters from three
companies worked on yesterday's fire.

It was burning along Plum Branch
Road near Concord and took a couple of
hours to bring under control.

The fire scorched both sides of
the railroad tracks and threatened
several homes.

Authorities say high winds and
dry conditions made it tough to fight.

The fire burned about five acres
before it was under control.
