ANCHOR ON CAM KIMBERLY ON CAM
GRAPHIC=None It's the country that invented tea,
but that doesn't mean there's no room
for COFFEE on the menu.
In fact, China's coffee craze has
gotten so big.. it's now one of the
most promising markets..
And as Celia Hatton shows us, that
has Starbucks percolating.

NAT SOUND - POLICEMAN BLOWING WHISTLE
AT BUSY INTERSECTION
When life in changing China gets to be
too much, there's one escape that's
familiar to most Americansthe
neighborhood Starbucks.
NAT SOUND - STARBUCKS
Caught between stressful offices and
tiny apartments, many in China treat
Starbucks as a local community center
spending more than an hour each visit
chatting working taking refuge from the
world outside.
Beijinger Bao XiaoHe considers
Starbucks to be a second home.
SOT: BAO XIAO HE/STARBUCKS CUSTOMER
I spend my spare time at Starbucks or
at home, just those two places.
She's not the only one who feels that
way with more than 200 stores, the
booming China market is now the Seattle
company's 1 priority.
CELIA HATTON ON-CAMERA BRIDGE:
Starbucks wasn't guaranteed success in
country where tea still dominates and
most people don't make enough money in
a day to afford even the cheapest cup
of coffee on the Starbucks menu.
SOT: HOWARD SCHULTZ/STARBUCKS CHAIRMAN
The awareness of Starbucks has shocked
us. People walk into our stores who
cannot speak English and order a
frappacino!
But not everyone's been seduced by the
smell of fresh coffee. This man s never
heard of Starbucks. Besides, he says,
he's a lifelong tea drinker.
NATS: STARBUCKS EXTERIOR
The company s also had some growing
painsmany cried foul in 2000 when
Starbucks opened a branch inside the
Forbidden City, China s historic gem in
Beijing. And just weeks ago, Starbucks
won a tough three year legal battle
against a copycat cafi in Shanghai.
Howard Schultz is confident those
troubles are in the past.
SOT: HOWARD SCHULTZ/STARBUCKS CHAIRMAN
We may have the right product in the
right place at the right time.
Many are grateful for a place to take a
breather in what's fast becoming
China's shared living room. Celia
Hatton, CBS News, Beijing.

Pittsnogle PIHTZ'-nah-gihl had
26 points for the Mountaineers to key
the 67-to-62 win over Pitt.
Earlier this year he failed to
score against the Panthers.
The win gives WVU third place in
the Big East, and clinches a first-
round bye in the tournament.

NFL Network Despite his heavy baggage - Vick
turned in some impressive times -
running a legitimate 4 point 42 forty
yard dash.
His time was the second fastest
among all the quarerbacks - only Texas
A&M's Reggie Neal was quicker.
Vick also did a nice job in the
passing drills.
