Brent Watts is with us this

LIVE=Brent full LIVE FULL
*CG standup Brent Watts
bwatts@wdbj7.com Robin, the first thing on their
mind is, where is winter? And that's
certainly a great question.
All I can say is, we are going to
cover a few winter-related topics this
week on Beyond the Forecast. Cold air,
and wind chill.
ENG#=1 SOT FULL
SOT FULL Our first question comes from
Roanoke. J. Simmons asks: What do you
mean when you you say cold air is more
dense than warm air. Well, air
temperature is an average speed of
atoms and molecules. The faster the
molecules, the higher the temperature.
In a cold volume of air the molecules
snuggle closer together and make the
air more dense.
You can see this in a couple of
ways. For example, the cold air
associated with a cold front is very
dense. It plows into warmer air and
forces it to rise. Clouds can form and
if conditions are right, even
precipitation.
Cold air damming is another
example of how dense cold air is. It
happens a lot during the winter when
cold air comes down from the north and
settles into the valleys with nowhere
to go. The large mountain chains can
keep one side of the mountains warm and
the other side locked in with clouds
and cold air.
There's an experiment you can do.
Take 2 balloons of the same size. Place
one in the freezer for an hour, the
other leave room temperature. Then,
take both balloons and release them at
the same time.
The rate a balloon rises will be
a function of the density difference
between the air in the balloon and the
air outside. The air in colder balloon
is much more dense, making it rise
slower than the room temperature
balloon.
Our next question comes from
Kelly in Danville who wonders: What is
used to calculate wind chill?
Good question. Well as you can see it's
a very simple equation. One that
forecasters do in their head on the
spot. NOT!
Wind chill is based on Wind Speed
and air temperature. The higher the
wind speed on a cold day, the more we
lose body heat. This wind chill factor
takes into account these elements.
For example a 30 degree day
doesn't sound that bad. But now factor
in a 35mph wind. Now it feels like
14degrees day! Way too cold!
END SOT END SOT
OUT Q=WAY TOO COLD.
