File Tape A House committee yesterday voted
to carry over Senator Steve Newman's
bill so it can be studied.
To appease some who opposed the
bill, Senator Newman expanded it to
include all lakes within Virginia's
borders, but it wasn't enough.
Smith Mountain Lake has seen
seven deaths in the past three years.
Newman says he'll try again next
year.
Meanwhile, the governor has
already signed a bill in to law that
requires anyone convicted of violating
certain boating laws to take an
approved boating safety course.
That law takes affect July first.
